Peter Jackson says the Extended Edition of ‘The Hobbit: The Desolation Of Smaug’ could contain 25 minutes of additional footage in the form of deleted scenes.

The film-maker told Deadline: “The first one [‘An Unexpected Journey’], there wasn’t that much we left on the cutting room floor and it wasn’t earth shattering. But this is worthwhile stuff that you haven’t seen before.”

Having stood at 161 minutes, the original theatrical release for ‘Desolation of Smaug’ was the shortest by several minutes of the entire saga, dating back to 2001’s ‘Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship Of The Ring’.

This may well have been a reaction to the first Hobbit movie, ‘An Unexpected Journey’, which was poorly received and criticised for being too long.

The Extended Edition of ‘The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug’ hasn’t officially been announced yet, but it’s expected to be released in November in the run up to the release of the final film in the trilogy.

Talk also turned to Jackson’s future now that his 13-year involvement with Tolkien is almost complete.

He still owns the rights to a remake of ‘The Dam Busters’, the WWII classic with the theme tune beloved of England football fans, which he’d originally planned for 2010.

Stephen Fry wrote a screenplay, with Christian Rivers slated to direct and Jackson producing. But the film was postponed.

“I’ve had so many people the last five years come and ask, ‘When are you going to make ‘The Dam Busters’? When are you going to make ‘The Dam Busters’?’ he said.

“Honestly, you ask me what I got out of five years of making ‘The Hobbit’? It was me feeling like I have to make The Dam Busters, because of the endless people asking, ‘When are you going to make ‘The Dam Busters’?’

“There is only a limited span I can abide, of people driving me nuts asking me when I’m going to do that project. So I’ll have to do it.

“I want to, actually, it’s one of the truly great true stories of the Second World War, a wonderful, wonderful story.”

'The Hobbit: The Battle of the Five Armies' is coming to cinemas this December.
