Jamaican double sprint gold medallist Usain Bolt is now on a par with the great US sprinter Jesse Owens but should show more respect to his fellow competitors, IOC chief Jacques Rogge said.
Owens became one of the biggest names in the Olympics by winning four golds in the 1936 Berlin Games but Bolt's 100 and 200 metres wins, both set in world record times, have earned him a place alongside the American, according to Rogge.
"Bolt is another dimension in sprint," the International Olympic Committee president said. "Bolt must be considered now the same way like Jesse Owens should have been in the '30s. It is different in that Bolt has a bigger edge than Owens in his finals."
The Jamaican won both races by a wide margin.
"Bolt in a way - if he maintains that in the future - will bring a mark like Jesse Owens."
The Jamaican won the 100m and 200m sprint gold in world records - the latter clinched on Wednesday in 19.30 seconds - but Rogge was not completely satisfied with the manner in which he achieved them.
"I think he should show more respect, shake hands, give a tap on the shoulder to the other ones. Not making gestures like the one he made in the 100 metres," he said.
Rogge was referring to his comfortable 100m win on Saturday in 9.69 seconds where he pounded his chest before crossing the finishing line.
"He still has to mature," Rogge said. "I would love him to show more respect to his competitors. He should learn that he should shake hands with competitors."
"I understand the joy. He might have interpreted that in another way but the way it was perceived is 'catch me if you can'. You don't do that," said Rogge, who participated in three Olympics from 1968 to 1976 in yachting.
Rogge said that was something Bolt would learn with time.
"Do not forget that he is still young. He is a young man. Bolt will learn that sooner or later. He is a great athlete, of course."
Bolt celebrated his 22nd birthday on Thursday in Beijing ahead of the 4x100 metres relay where he could add a third gold on Friday.

I don't care if Rogge is Racist or not. Unfortunately there are many in this world and there's nothing we can do about it. However, his public comment that Usain lacks respect is absurd. I am Jamaican by birth and proud. And I understand how Jamaicans celebrate and show their pride. For those of you who do not know anything about our culture, keep your mouths shut (ESPECIALLY U ROGGE). Many other athletes would love to have done what Usain did but can't. He has earned the right to celebrate because he has won his races drug free, and it has nothing to do with disrespecting the other athletes. I myself thought he was a bit of a show off at the time but when I look back I probably would have done the same thing. Call it what you like, but I hope this does not put the guy off from celebrating the Jamaican way in the future. Ronaldinho used to do his Brazilian dance when he scored his goals too, nothing wrong with that. And for you lot who think that Jamaican people have no respect, go and get a life! Respect should be earned! Gaysha
well done Usan, well done GB, sad to read the comments of monsieur Rogge.
a wey do dis bombo*clat idiot! Bolt, continue to tek it to the world.
One Love!!!
The problem is really with the French. There is a waning French colonial standing (or language influence) in the world and the French , in whatever international positions they are in, are using such positions to remind the world of 'France' (viv la!). They had better concentrate their intellect and concerns on the injustices against the non white people in France instead of worrying about Usain Bolt.
Of course in this anglo internet age, such fools may be easily identified and scorned. Whether such Frenchies are in the World Bank,ICC, Catholic Church and yes Olympic etc as well, they may be easily identified. This rant from this rogue is akin to the last dying kicks of the French colonial horse - thats all this stupid comments from Rogge are ! Only the stupid fools dont know it themselves, but we can all see quite clearly where they are coming from.
Mr Rogge, you are just a Nazi, and the modern day Hitler.... To hell with you. Leave Bolt alone..
You should be ashamed of your old self...
Rogge kiss Bolt black ass. I thought the loosers should congratulate the winner, not the other way around. The americans beat there chest in the past you never commented, you are so upset because a small country took both titles.GO AND GET A LIFE ROGGE.
All you who support Rogge's foolish and jealous comments need Usain to beat uno. I'm happy to help out just tell me weh uno deh! Mek any a uno ever come Jamaica and you will see the nuff respect we show uno... with a leather belt!!!
Don't know if it is just me but don't you notice how black athletes are so often accused of being proud and disrespectful (Hamilton, Williams sisters,Thierry Henry etc) and then subsequently vilified...I'll assume that means that all white athletes (and peoples) are humble and respectful? Wouldn't that be a nice world?....welldone to everyone who has criticised Rougue comments, obviously there is very little we can do about "terrorist" (racism=terrorism) statements, other than giving it the name it desrves!!...Grow up Mr Rogue!
why did rogge did have to say @#$% like that som e peole don,t like to see other happy .i am really piss off with is comment , u should be ashamed of yourself how do u look at yourself in the mirro we jamaican are proud people you have just upset the whole nation.you don,t know what u have done.
Everyone is entitled to their options, but Mr Rogge you are so wrong!! Having 91000 people screaming and cheering for the most exciting 100 meters in history can cause anyone to celebrate with exceeding ecstasy, sometimes forgetting protocol (albeit, not in this case as there is no rule to shake your opponents hand after a race).
Mr. Bolt is a fine example of athletics at its best. Drug free and great talent.
In addition, the hitting of ones chest is a sign of ‘Yah man’, a sense of, ‘I have achieved my goal’, ‘nice one’.
I am an offended at your remarks Mr. Rogge and I encourage the Ministry of Sport in Jamaica to protest against your inappropriate and ill-advised remarks.
Mr. Rogge is trying to convince the people around the world that Usain Bolt should have shown more respect to his fellow opponent, Excuse me! Mr Rogge the Usain Bolt has put more sweat and blood on his entire training before he goes to Beijing. Extreme preparation and loads of body pain he had overcome and just because of gesture of celebation of winning and you will criticised an outstanding atlete around the world.
You should actually speak to him in private and not involving media for your own stupid stunt to get attention.
Don't show off. Just play your best. If you're good, you are good!!, people will notice. ...and that is what is called good sportsmanship
why did rogge did have to say @#$% like that som e peole don,t like to see other happy .i am really piss off with is comment , u should be ashamed of yourself how do u lok at yourself in the mirro we jamaica proud people you have just upset the whole nation.you don,t know what u have done.
Mr Rogge, You are clearly an ignorant man! How do you know Bolt did not congratulate his compettitors? Were you in the locker room, infact were you there? What the cameras choose to show is not always the entire picture, a sensible person would take this with a pinch of salt.
Furthermore, it is not for you to dictate how one chooses to celebrate victory. The only person Bolt should be tapping on the shoulder is himself. Training is imperative in order to stand a chance at winning. He won beacuse he was prepared, and he was the best!
As for lack of respect, Bolt is not obliged to respect anyone, and if in your terms lack of respect is not patting his fellow compettitors on the back then so be it! If they could have caught him, they would have. He deserves and has earnt the right to celebrate. His behaviour has neither been offensive nor arrogant. He is a young man celebrating victory.
It is funny you are so offended by his behaviour considering the showmanship in the past from other arrogant compettitors such as the USA. No one has been more arrogant than them. So I would say to you get over it and you show some respect for the gallant effort from a young man from what most consider to be a third world country.
thats comming from a guy that didn't win a medal in his olympic bids - nuff said

come on give the guy a damn break,he is 22 today .the guy is just enjoying wat he does.footbalers celebrate scoring in special ways.keep beating your chest bolt and pulling on that J A M A I C A shirt .he said hes proud of his achievement and he knows his country is proud of him.he couldnt be more right. Some people can never be happy for our small island of jamaica.why? guess you want to associate us with the drugs and crime always..got some news for you lot.THE YARDY GANG DOWN A CHINA GWAAN RUN OUT UNUH BELLY.WATCH FOR THE RELAYS .MORE GOLD...OH AND FOR WHO DONT KNOW USAIN BOLT WASNT DOING NO CRAZY DANCE EITHER.AFTER THE 100 HE BUSS THE NUH LINGA . AND AFTER THE 200 HE DID THE NINETIES ROCK.
There will always be someone to break records. And lets hand it to Bolt he is another
great runner to enter the worlds stage. But I TOTALLY agree with Rogges COMMENT.What Rogge needs to understand A Jamacians idea of RESPECT is totally different from other
Carribean people and we all know it but afraid to speak out. And if people are going
make ridiculous comments like 'BLack mans pride' this no longer is about the Olympics.
We are here to Celebrate A MAN winning a race WHETHER BLACK OR WHITE.
Trica Dean
I Tell u what,
Tht mine can @#$% rite off,
Bolt Has the right to beat his cheast,
It gives the others a chance as it slows him down.
he could of walked in tht race and he still would of won,
he Jogged the 100m n half-sprant the 200.
Tbh,
Id like to watch tht Rogge man try and jog that quick
let alone sprint it,
and if he had just beat two world records jogging,
He has the right to celebrate.
Or is that wrong ?
It is quite ironic that all those years when athletes from other countries were winning, wheather fairly or unfairly and behaving like they were invincible Mr. Rogge did not write an article. I am very suspicious sir. Is it because it's a Caribbean Athlete and we are not to do so well? I do beg an answer. C'mon sir this is probably the greatest feat we have achieve in the Caribbean. Be a good sport and dont spoil it for us.
