The Good Wife Star Josh Charles Opens Up On His Shock Exit: 'It Was A Proper Goodbye'

Josh Charles has admitted that he knew about his character's shock exit on The Good Wife for months, but was sworn to secrecy over Will Gardner's death.

Sunday night's episode saw a whole lot of drama unfold at Cook Country Courthouse when Gardner was gunned down by his deranged client, Jeffrey Grant (Hunter Parrish), in the middle of a court proceeding, and with his lifeless body flashing up on screen, it looks certain that that's the end for one of the hit series' key characters.

Josh dropped by The Late Show with David Letterman last night for a bit of a debrief, with the host opening the chat with "You got killed off!"

"That's what you gotta do to get on the Letterman show. I had to do that, I had to get killed off to get on your show," Josh quipped.

The actor admitted of Will's demise, "we've known this since last year. It's been one of the greatest gigs for me in my entire career, but at the end of last year, my contract was up and I was just ready to kind of move on".

Coming back for season five was a great decision for him and his character, Josh added. It "really was great for the show and also was a really proper goodbye to the character, so that was special."

The actor admitted it was tough to keep the plot twist secret from his nearest and dearest, telling Letterman that he only told family and friends "that I know could keep a secret, which is a very few."

And it turned out that Josh's neighbours were just as affected by Will's death as millions of fans across the country: "There's the neighbors – today, I will say this. I went downstairs, and I saw by our mailbox, the neighbors across the street, who I don't even know, had left my wife and I a really beautiful note just saying that we feel like a family member had died and we know this is just a TV show and all that".

"But it was, I have to say, I was very touched by it. A lot of the, you know, the response on Twitter has been much the same and I just want to say to the fans that, you know, I really appreciate all of your comments," he added.
