Vanessa Redgrave Set To Star On Screen In Call The Midwife

Vanessa Redgrave is set to star on screen on Call The Midwife for the first time after narrating three series of the popular BBC drama.

The veteran actress will be playing Jennifer Worth, the writer whose real-life stories have inspired the hit series. Jessica Raine left the show after three series last year after starring as a young Worth.

It's been reported that Redgrave will be joining the cast for the Christmas episode but will continue to narrate the story.

A fourth series is set bring new cast members with East is East star Linda Bassett joining the team as well as Fresh Meat actress Charlotte Ritchie.

Set at the beginning of the 1960s, the eight-episode series will be following a community of nuns and nurses at Nonnatus House as well as the community of Poplar.

Filming for the new series has already started at Chatham dockyard and in Chertsey. Of the show, writer and executive producer, Heidi Thomas, reportedly said: "The medical, social, and emotional stories at the heart of Call the Midwife continue to inspire and compel me. The Nonnatus House nurses and midwives feel like my best-loved friends."
