The UK’s exit from the EU has affected the way businesses import, export and transport goods. New rules and processes came into effect from 1 January 2022.

But how do these new rules affect you and what will you need to do?

The new rules in summary from 1 January 2022:

Custom declarations
Traders must complete customs declarations on goods they are moving from the EU into Great Britain, at the time they are transported into Great Britain – this can no longer be delayed. Read a step-by-step guide for the New Customs Declaration rules.

Register for Goods Vehicle Movement service
Hauliers must be registered for the Goods Vehicle Movement Service (GVMS) to move goods between Great Britain and the EU. Register online for GVMS.

Rules of origin

The 12-month delay on supplier declarations has ended. This means that if you import or export goods to and from the EU, you must be able to prove that they meet the Rules of Origin to use preferential tariffs

Pre-notifying imports
There are new requirements for importing some sanitary and phytosanitary (SPS) goods, such as meat or plants, to Great Britain from the EU. Traders will be required to pre-notify when importing most Products of Animal Origin, Animal By-Products, High Risk Food and Feed not of Animal Origin and regulated plants and plant products. Note: The changes for customs declarations and pre-notifying imports do not yet apply to goods moving from Ireland to Great Britain. Rules of origin also work differently if you’re moving goods between Northern Ireland and Great Britain - contact the Trader Support Service for up-to-date guidance and support.
