The winners of the Churchill Awards, honouring the over-65s
World Cup final hat-tricks, rock music and A Touch of Frost were on the agenda at the Mandarin Oriental in Hyde Park on Thursday.
Now in their sixth year, the Churchill Awards recognise and highlight the significant role that over-65s play in all realms of British society.
Household names such as Lord Melvyn Bragg and Sir James Dyson were honoured at the ceremony, winning in the literature and business categories, respectively. Football legends Sir Geoff Hurst and Gordon Banks were commended for their contributions to charity.
Pink Floyd's David Gilmour and flautist Sir James Galway won the music awards. Margaret Calvert, who designed many of the UK's road signs and transport fonts, was singled out for her art, while BBC stalwart Moira Stuart topped the radio category.
Sir David Jason, best known for playing Del Boy and Inspector Jack Frost, won the stage and screen category, which was voted for by Telegraph readers.
It wasn't just celebrities who were honoured at the Churchill Awards. Two Local Hero awards went to Danny and Val Edwards, from Southampton, for their decades of providing foster care, and Oriana Taylor from Fareham, for her work helping people with mental and physical disabilities.
Bill Morgan, 94, won the Churchill Owner award for his contribution to everyday life at the Eaton Lodge development in Chester, as well as for talking to local schoolchildren about the war.
Dame Esther Rantzen, Churchill ambassador, called the winners "remarkable role models". She added: "They have all made a difference to the lives of millions of people over the past year, and this is a wonderful opportunity to showcase and celebrate their achievements. We will continue to be inspired by them and learn from them."
