2022 Oscars nominations announced

Benedict Cumberbatch, Olivia Colman, Andrew Garfield and Sir Kenneth Branagh are among the British stars to nominated for Oscars in 2022.

Hosted by Tracee Ellis Ross and Leslie Jordan, the Academy Of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences unveiled the nominees for the 94th Academy Awards today.

The ten films nominated for Best Picture are Belfast, CODA, Don't Look Up, Drive My Car, Dune, King Richard, Licorice Pizza, Nightmare Alley, The Power of the Dog, and West Side Story.

New Zealand director Jane Campion — The Power of the Dog — made history by becoming the first female director to land two Best Directing nominations for the first time ever. Only seven women directors have ever been nominated in the Academy's 94 year history.

Her film landed the most nominations with 12 including nods for Best Supporting Actor, Best Supporting Actress, and Best Adapted Screenplay. Dune follows with 10, while West Side Story and Belfast both picked up seven nominations. King Richard picked up six.

Yahoo UK named The Power of the Dog the best film of 2021.

Benedict Cumberbatch and Andrew Garfield will compete for Best Actor with Denzel Washington, Will Smith and Javier Bardem. Olivia Colman will compete with Jessica Chastain, Penelope Cruz, Nicole Kidman and Kristen Stewart for Best Actress.

Dame Judi Dench picked up her seventh Academy Award nomination for Best Supporting Actress in Belfast, while Sir Kenneth Branagh was also nominated for Best Original Screenplay and Best Directing for the same film.

The 94th Oscars will take place on 27 March. A host has yet to be confirmed.

This year’s eligibility period was shortened to 10 months.

To be eligible for best picture consideration films must have submitted a confidential Academy Representation and Inclusion Standards entry as part of the submission requirements.
