Adam Sandler's 'Waterboy' co-star Kathy Bates consoles him after Oscars snub: 'You was robbed!!'

Adam Sandler’s dramatic performance in Uncut Gems was snubbed by Academy Awards voters, but at least one of the people who really count in his life most certainly approved.

Sandler had been considered a likely nominee, though not a lock, in the category of Best Actor, after being recognized by critics at other awards shows, such as the National Board of Review Awards and the Gotham Awards. Ultimately, though, the Saturday Night Live alum’s name was not among those that Issa Rae and John Cho read Monday morning. It would have been his first nomination for an Oscar, although he earned a nod for a Golden Globe for his turn in Punch-Drunk Love in 2003.

Sandler was a good sport about it. As his acknowledged the turn of events in a tweet, he also congratulated his friends who were nominated, “especially Mama.”

The nickname was a reference to the 1998 comedy The Waterboy, in which Bates played Sandler’s overbearing mother. Sandler played Bobby Boucher, a man who worked as the water boy for the nearby college who becomes a member of its football team.

Bates, who earned her fourth Oscar nomination for her supporting role in Richard Jewell, gave the love right back to Sandler. “I love you my Bobby Boucher!!!” she raved. “You was robbed! But Mama loves you!!!” As far as she’s concerned, Sandler is the “GOAT,” which she defined as a slang term that she familiarized herself with just for him.

Rob Schneider, another of Sandler’s co-stars from The Waterboy, showed him some love, too, on what must have otherwise been a disappointing morning.

Schneider worked with Sandler on Saturday Night Live in the ‘90s, and he continues to co-star in many of his projects.
