Adam Wingard To Direct Manga Adaptation Death Note

Adam Wingard, director of ‘You’re Next’ and ‘The Guest’, has signed on to make ‘Death Note’ – an adaptation of the popular horror manga, developed by Warner Bros.

The Japanese franchise has been adapted into feature length anime in its country of origin, but Wingard will helm a version expected to come out in the next few years.

‘Death Note’ is about a student who discovers a note book that has a supernatural ability – when he writes the name of someone he knows in it, that person winds up dead. His decision to rid the world of all he deems evil leads to some dark, not to mention spiraling, consequences, as he’s tracked by a detective known as ‘L’, who is determined to stop his act of playing God.

Before starting work on this, Wingard will release ‘The Woods’ that’s due to shoot this summer for Lionsgate. It’s therefore likely that the earliest we will see this could be towards the end of 2016, but any dates are as yet unknown.

With Shane Black (writer of ‘Lethal Weapon’, ‘Kiss Kiss Bang Bang’ and ‘Iron Man 3′) previously rumoured to be on board, the script has apparently now been tended to by Jeremy Slater (scribe of the latest ’Fantastic Four’ reboot), after writing the most recent draft of the movie.

With both ‘You’re Next’ and ‘The Guest’ under his belt – and both offering a fresh, exciting spin on indie horror cum thrillers – Wingard is perhaps one of the more interesting and exciting directors to emerge in recent years.

The manner in how he handles Japanese manga will surely be one to keep an eye on, notably with the horror element to its story, which is a genre he seems more than comfortable crafting.
