Andrew Garfield: Studio Cuts Harmed The Amazing Spider-Man 2

Andrew Garfield has said that decisions and cuts made by ‘certain people’ at the film’s studio Sony may have damaged the finished product.

The British actor, who played Spidey for a second time earlier this year and starred alongside Jamie Foxx as Electro, made the remarks during an interview with The Daily Beast.

“When you have something that works as a whole, and then you start removing portions of it… saying, ‘No, that doesn’t work,’ then the thread is broken, and it’s hard to go with the flow of the story,” he said.

“Certain people at the studio had problems with certain parts of [the movie], and ultimately the studio is the final say in those movies, because they’re the tentpoles, so you have to answer to those people.”

Garfield would not say what parts specifically were removed from the movie, but he added: “I got to work in deep scenes that you don’t usually see in comic book movies, and I got to explore this orphan boy — a lot of which was taken out, and which we’d explored more.”

The actor maintained that he ‘genuinely loved’ the film’s original script, written by Alex Kurtzman and Robert Orci.

The film came out in May, and though it ended up grossing over $700 million worldwide, it made less than the first movie in all, and was beaten to number one in the box office charts by Seth Rogen comedy ‘Bad Neighbours’ on its opening weekend, not a good sign for a studio tentpole movie.

Critics were also decidedly lukewarm in their response.

Addressing the criticism it received, he added: “What’s underneath the complaint, and how can we learn from that?”

“We have to ask ourselves, ‘What do we believe to be true?’ Is it that this is the fifth Spider-Man movie in however many years, and there’s a bit of fatigue? Is it that there was too much in there? Is it that it didn’t link? If it linked seamlessly, would that be too much? Were there tonal issues? What is it?”

The next in the series, ‘The Amazing Spider-Man 3’, is set for release in 2018, with Spidey spin-off projects including characters like Venom and the Sinister Six are also being plotted.
