Andy Serkis Only Has One Star Wars VII Role

Although Andy Serkis has been rumoured for multiple roles in ‘Star Wars: The Force Awakens’, it looks as though that may have been exaggerated.

It’s no secret that Andy Serkis provided the sinister voice of the recent ‘Star Wars VII’ teaser trailer. After all, he soon admitted that was the case. But is that his only role in the galaxy far, far away? Fans have been quick to speculate that he may have more than one role – providing a motion capture character as well as a physical presence.

But now the man himself seems to have quashed those rumours…

During an interview with Entertainment Weekly, the 50-year-old British actor revealed that he does not play multiple parts in the galaxy far, far away…

“Not true at all,” he said of the rumours. “I can say I only play one character.”

But will he provide a physical presence or his trademark motion-capture skills?

“I can’t say a single thing about that. I’m sorry!” he said with a massive grin. “These things will all come out in the fullness of time, I promise.”

Of course, the rumours that Serkis had landed multiple roles in ‘Star Wars VII’ seem to have originated from a desire to see him on screen in the flesh, as well as donning the mo-cap suit for a more decidedly digital performance.

But at this stage, very little is known about his character.

“He’s been through some stuff,” he said of the gravelly, rather sinister-sounding character. And it sounds as though it was entirely Serkis behind the voice. “That is the character,” he added. “There’s no digital manipulation. That’s just me.”

Unfortunately, there are no further details about the character Serkis plays… except that rumours that he’ll lead a band of acrobatic, motion-capture characters aren’t quite true.

“I’m not leading a band of gymnasts or acrobats,” he said with a laugh. So at least there’s that.

What kind of character will Andy Serkis play? At this stage, we have no idea… but judging from that voice, his presence can’t be good for the rest of the galaxy. But for now, we’ll have to wait and see.

‘Star Wars: The Force Awakens’ heads to cinemas on 18 December 2015.
