Andy Serkis’ Star Wars 7 Character Revealed

It looks as though Andy Serkis’ role in ‘Star Wars: The Force Awakens’ has finally been revealed… and yes, it involved plenty of motion capture.

Appearing on StarWars.com, photographer Annie Leibowitz unveiled an image of Andy Serkis in his ‘Star Wars VII’ mo-cap gear… and they finally revealed who he’s playing.

“A previously unpublished photo of Andy Serkis, also sporting mo-cap gear for his portrayal of Supreme Leader Snoke, is available here exclusively,” they revealed. And while we finally confirm that Andy Serkis will be playing a motion capture role, his new name creates plenty of new questions.

Most importantly, who is Supreme Leader Snoke?

Unfortunately, there’s not much to go on. After all, the only shred of information we have so far is the character’s name, and this cool image of Andy Serkis fully adorned in mo-cap gear.

But that really doesn’t tell us much.

All we know so far is that it’s Supreme Leader Snoke who provided the sinister-sounding voiceover for the first ‘Star Wars VII’ teaser trailer.

“There has been an awakening,” he said. “Have you felt it? The dark side and the light.”

It certainly seems as though Snoke is in some way Force sensitive… and having felt both the Dark Side and the Light could mean that he’s familiar with both sides of the Force. A fallen Jedi perhaps?

Still, I can’t help thinking that ‘Supreme Leader’ sounds just menacing enough to be the head of a galactic dictatorship. And the look on Serkis’ face says it all – I’d bet that Snoke is likely going to be the next Emperor Palpatine. At least, to some degree.

The Empire has likely fallen a long time ago by the time of ‘The Force Awakens’. But with The First Order seemingly taking its place, they’re going to need someone in charge. And it could well be Andy Serkis.

But will Supreme Leader Snoke wield an iconic red lightsaber?

At the moment, we’re unsure… and his relationship with ‘Star Wars VII’ villain Kylo Ren remains a bit of a mystery. Will they be working together towards some nefarious end? For now, we’ll have to wait and see.

Either way, it looks as though the galaxy far, far away might be facing a new threat.

‘Star Wars: The Force Awakens’ heads to cinemas on 18 December 2015.
