Anne Hathaway Linked To Giant Monster Movie

Looks like the giant monster renaissance kick-started by ‘Pacific Rim’ and ‘Godzilla’ is set to continue, as word comes out of the Cannes Film Festival that Anne Hathaway is attached to star in another new giant monster movie, entitled ‘Colossal.’

However, from the sound of things we should not anticipate your typical cartoonish monster smackdown here, as according to The Hollywood Reporter, writer-director Nacho Vigalondo’s film is pitched as “’Lost in Translation’ meets ‘Godzilla.’”

Anyone who’s seen ‘Godzilla’ director Gareth Edwards’ debut ‘Monsters’ would probably agree that’s an adequate description for that earlier film - but based on the released synopsis this sounds like it could be something altogether different, and potentially very interesting indeed.

‘Colossal’ will reportedly cast Hathaway (last seen in Christopher Nolan’s ‘Interstellar’) as Gloria, an “ordinary woman who, after losing her job and her fiancé, decides to leave her life in New York to move back to her hometown.

“But when news reports surface that a giant lizard is destroying the city of Tokyo, Gloria gradually comes to realize that she is strangely connected to these far-off events via the power of her mind.

“In order to prevent further destruction, Gloria needs to determine why her seemingly insignificant existence has such a colossal effect on the fate of the world.”

This intriguing premise seems to suggest an effective balance between epic monster carnage and intimate emotional content, which some felt 2014′s ‘Godzilla’ failed to adequately accomplish.

Vigalondo, best known for acclaimed 2007 Spanish sci-fi thriller ‘Timecrimes,’ describes ‘Colossal’ as “my most ambitious script so far, and probably also the most personal one. Having Anne and this terrific team around goes beyond my craziest expectations.“

Voltage Pictures are financing the film, for which no further cast or release dates have yet been announced.
