Ant-Man Suit Designer Explains Hank Pym’s Tech

It seems that ‘Ant-Man’ won’t shrink away from science… as Marvel costume designer Sammy Sheldon explains some of the science behind the Ant-Man suit.

It’s no secret that ‘Ant-Man’ is a lot more science-based than some of Marvel’s other comic book heroes. After all, with scientist Hank Pym inventing the technology, it’s a far cry from Thor’s more mythical origins.

But how does it all work?

During an interview with Empire Magazine, the ‘Ant-Man’ costume designer explained why we won’t see Scott Lang running around without that iconic helmet.

“When you shrink, the molecules in the air are too big for your lungs,” Sheldon explained. “He has to be fully contained or he’d die.”

Of course, designers Sammy Sheldon and Ivo Coveney were on board with ‘Ant-Man’ ever since Edgar Wright was set to take the director’s chair. But while they’ve helped develop the suit since its inception, it seems they were still making changes on set.

“We had a long discussion about the two cables going into his helmet,” Coveney reveals. “They’re a massive weakness - Yellowjacket could just rip them off and he’s dead. But, in the end, it just looks cooler with them on.”

“The fact that he’s shrinking is enough to get away with anything else, really!” said Sheldon.

But will we see those infamous Pym’s Particles?

Originally created by Dr Hank Pym, it’s Pym’s Particles that make the shrinking technology possible… and while the interview does hint towards some ‘mysterious chemicals’ which are used during Scott Lang’s transformation, the particles are never mentioned by name.

Of course, ‘Ant-Man’ villain Darren Cross is particularly interested in Pym’s research, and steals the designs behind the technology in order to build his own, more militaristic version of the Ant-Man suit.

But are Pym’s Particles in the mix? For now, we’ll have to wait and see.

‘Ant-Man’ heads to cinemas on 17 July 2015.
