Ant-Man’s Evangeline Lilly Not A Fan Of The Comics

Evangeline Lilly may be starring in Marvel’s upcoming ‘Ant-Man’ movie, but it seems she’s not exactly a fan of the comic books.

During an interview with Collider, the 35-year-old actress revealed that while Marvel had given her a stack of comic books to dig into, she didn’t exactly find them to be inspirational.

“I am still trying to figure out how to get my hands on original ‘Ant-Man’ comics, where you get them,” she said. “I’ve been given a couple recent ‘Ant-Man’ comics. No offense Marvel, but they are total crap.”

“I really want to read the original ones,” she added, “because I got through two and I was like, dude, you can’t force-feed me another one of these magazines. It was terrible.”

But why was she having quite so much trouble with them? It looks as though she’s been reading the far-less interesting ‘Irredeemable Ant-Man’.

“Janet’s not in them,” she explained, “and neither is Hank and neither is Scott. It’s just a completely different fabrication. So if anybody has any old ‘Ant-Man’ comics they want to lend me…”

Of course, ‘Irredeemable Ant-Man’ takes the story away from the iconic Ant-Man Hank Pym, or even his protégé, Scott Lang. Instead, it sees the shrinking technology given to a completely different hero – low-level S.H.I.E.L.D. agent, Eric O’Grady.

Introduced to the comic books in 2006, it was an effort to modernise the Ant-Man character which led to his creation… but poor Eric was eventually killed off. And now Scott land once again dons the Ant-Man suit in the latest reboot of the Ant-Man comics.

Thankfully, Evangeline Lilly is a bit more enthusiastic about the upcoming film… and even reveals that while we might see The Wasp, it seems that her mother’s fate is already sealed.

“When we begin the film, Janet Van Dyne is not alive,” she explains. “She’s lost her mother. That marks the character in a way that affects everything she does. Her mother has become a figure in her mind more than a human being, and I think that she has always suffered from that loss and not having that presence, that female figure in her life.“

Of course, there are plenty of rumours surrounding Hope’s mother, Janet… most of which assume that she will appear at some point in ‘Ant-Man’ – presumably as part of a flashback. But while Hope’s mother may have taken up the mantle of The Wasp, why hasn’t Hank Pym passed the technology onto his daughter?

“Why isn’t Hope Ant-Man? In a day and age when Ant-Man was first invented, it would have made sense. Why would he hand it off to his daughter? That wouldn’t make any sense at all. But in 2014, why wouldn’t he hand it off to his daughter, especially a daughter as intelligent and capable as Hope? Of course we answer all those questions, but I can’t tell you how or why.”

Does this mean that Hope Van Dyne won’t be donning The Wasp suit? For now, we’ll have to wait and see. But if anyone can pull that off, it’s Evangeline Lilly.

‘Ant-Man’ heads to cinemas on 17 July 2015.
