Ant-Man’s Hope Van Dyne Sides With Yellowjacket?

It looks as though ‘Ant-Man’ is going up against a corporate takeover as villain Corey Stoll reveals that Hope Van Dyne isn’t as good as we thought…

It’s no secret that ‘Ant-Man’ will feature a villain of miniscule proportions… in that Darren Cross (played by Corey Stoll) manages to create his own version of the Ant-Man technology. But how did acquire that knowledge?

It seems that he once worked for original Ant-Man, Hank Pym… and turned his own daughter against him.

During an interview with Entertainment Weekly, villainous ‘Ant-Man’ actor Corey Stoll explained the relationship between his character and Hank Pym… and how he uses it to his advantage.

“I was this child prodigy that Michael Douglas’ character Hank Pym discovered at an early age,” Stoll said of his character. “He nurtured me and I was part of his technology company. I started to become aware of these rumors of this fabled technology that can shrink people to half an inch while keeping their full-size strength. And I became very obsessed with it and demanded that we move forward. But Pym had sort of buried it for ethical, moral reasons.”

Of course, it’s already known that Hank Pym used the technology back in the ‘60s to become Ant-Man himself… and presumably helped fight crime as one of the first Avengers. But what happened to make him hang up the suit?

There are plenty of rumours suggesting that Pym’s wife – Janet Van Dyne – was killed during one of their crime-fighting escapades. And that might explain the fraught relationship between Pym and his daughter Hope, played by Evangeline Lilly.

According to Stoll, it’s Hope Van Dyne who helps him take over the company… but I can’t help thinking she probably regrets her actions once Darren Cross gets what he needs.

“Now, I’ve discovered my own version of that technology and I’m using it for militaristic purposes,” Stoll explained. “I’ve even started to use the technology myself, which as a sort of psychotic effect on people if they use it too much. I can’t get into the details of all the goodies of the Yellowjacket suit but it’s several generations advanced from what Ant-Man has. And then I put it on—and then I am Yellowjacket!”

It certainly adds a new dimension to the otherwise straight-forward story of ‘Ant-Man’. And it also makes a lot of sense. After all, Scott Lang’s relationship with his own daughter is just as troubled… and perhaps that’s why Pym wants to give him a second chance.

‘Ant-Man’ heads to cinemas on 17 July 2015.
