Oscar-nominated star Stanley Tucci is no longer a part of the Moonfall cast, as Ant-Man actor Michael Peña takes on the role of car dealer Tom Lopez.

Reported by Deadline, Tucci's departure from the Roland Emmerich-directed flick is wrapped up in travel restrictions between the UK and Canada.

What we can expect from Moonfall is a space drama that follows the aftermath of the Moon being knocked off its orbit of Earth by a mysterious force and hurtling towards our planet.

The official description adds: "With mere weeks before impact and against all odds, a ragtag team launches an impossible last-ditch mission into space, leaving behind everyone they love and risking everything to land on the lunar surface and save our planet from annihilation."

Within Hollywood, Emmerich is known as the master of disaster movies, having helmed blockbusters such as The Day After Tomorrow, Independence Day, 2012 and Godzilla over the last 25 years.

For his latest dip in the genre, the 65-year-old has already gathered a fine cast including Patrick Wilson, Halle Berry, John Bradley, Eme Ikwuakor, Charlie Plummer and Donald Sutherland.

Emmerich penned the screenplay alongside Harald Kloser and Spenser Cohen.

Moonfall is scheduled to hit the big screen sometime in 2022.
