Anthony Mackie Calls Avengers: Age Of Ultron “Disneyland For Adults”

Falcon actor Anthony Mackie, set to reprise his ‘Captain America: the Winter Soldier’ role in ‘Avengers: Age of Ultron,’ has praised the upcoming Marvel super-team sequel in somewhat unorthodox and colourful terminology.

Speaking at Washington State’s Emerald City Comic-Con (quoted by Comic Book Resources,) Mackie enthused, “Remember the first time you saw a 3D movie, and got a headache, and were like, ‘What happened to my brain?’ ‘Age of Ultron’ is like that, with The Rock punching you in the face.

“It’s like Disneyland for adults. It’s like going to Vegas with an unlimited credit card. It’s by far the most stupendous film experience you’ll have. It’s just ridiculous.”

This having been said, Mackie also admitted to not having known initially that he was in ‘Avengers: Age of Ultron’ at all:

“This is how it goes. About two weeks ago, I got a call. My friend was like, ‘Yo, Age of Ultron posters out.’ Why didn’t tell me you were in it?’ ‘I’m in it?’ That’s how Marvel rolls. When you see somebody and they say, ‘We can’t tell you,’ that’s because they don’t know.”

Still, it has long been expected that Mackie will be staying in the MCU as Falcon for the foreseeable future, and the actor promises we will see relationship between Falcon and Chris Evans’ Cap - based, Mackie says, around “mutual respect” and “soldier respect” - develop further in ‘Age of Ultron’ and next year’s ‘Captain America: Civil War.’

The question also arose of whether we might see the big screen Falcon take over the mantle of Captain America, as has recently happened in the comics. Mackie insists he’s in no hurry to do so:

"To go to work with those people every day, I’m very content and happy to be Falcon, next to Captain America. It’s great to be in a great movie with a great group of people rather than let your ego say, ‘I have to be the guy.’"

Interestingly, Mackie says that he was the first to reach out to Marvel (after his breakthrough appearance in 2009′s ‘The Hurt Locker,’ alongside future Hawkeye Jeremy Renner) in the hopes of working with them, and not with the role of Falcon in mind: “I was initially writing them because I wanted to be Black Panther.”

He also praised Marvel for their efforts toward presenting more female and non-white superhero characters in their future films:

"I think it’s very important that little girls have representation. That’s why I love Scarlett Johansson so much. That’s why I’m so excited they’re introducing all these female characters into the universe. That’s important. It’s to give everybody a little bit.

“The funny thing about movies is, growing up, I said, ‘Man, I wanted to be Superman.’ But this past Halloween, my son said he wanted to be Captain America.”

Mackie also recounted speaking to a parent whose child wanted to dress as Falcon for Halloween but couldn’t, “‘Because, y’know.’” “I’m like, ‘No, I don’t know. What, you couldn’t find a costume?’ ‘No, you’re Black.’ That is the problem.

"We always talk about representation, but I never understood representation until that conversation. It is important to look at the screen and see you."

‘Avengers: Age of Ultron’ hits screens on  23 April 2015, with ‘Captain America: Civil War’ set to follow on 29 April 2016.
