Artist Creates Gender-Reversed Avengers

One of the most persistent complaints about the contemporary wave of superhero movies (aside from the odd grumble of “oh no, not another superhero movie”) is the lack of female representation in the genre.

In the face of slow progress on the matter, one enterprising artist on Tumblr has given us an indication of what the Avengers might look like in an alternate universe.

Tumblr user Disimilis has taken the key figures of the Marvel Cinematic Universe and swapped their genders, with some interesting choices of actresses for the roles.

Selma Director To Make Marvel Movie?

Above, we have Kate Beckinsale taking over from Robert Downey Jr as Iron Man, while below we have Jennifer Lawrence filling Chris Hemsworth’s armour as the mighty Thor.

Replacing Tom Hiddleston as Thor’s devious sibling Loki we have Kristen Stewart:

And stepping into Chris Evans’ red white and blue suit as Captain America, it’s Amber Heard.

The least drastic transformation (i.e. beyond a hint of green in the eyes we’re pretty sure nothing’s been changed) is Mila Kunis, replacing Mark Ruffalo as Bruce Banner - we can only imagine how she’d look Hulked out:

But Shailene Woodley as Hawkeye may be a particular fan-pleaser, as with the hints of purple her look is actually a bit closer to the comics than Jeremy Renner in the movies.

And finally, just keep things balanced, we even have a male Black Widow (Black Widower?) in the form of Chris Pine.

Aside from Scarlett Johansson’s Black Widow, Jaime Alexander’s Lady Sif (’Thor’), Zoe Saldana’s Gamora (’Guardians of the Galaxy’) and most recently Elizabeth Olsen’s Scarlet Witch (’Avengers: Age of Ultron’), the Marvel Cinematic Universe has thus far limited women to non-heroic supporting roles.

Recognising the demand for more female heroes, Marvel have their first female-led solo movie, ‘Captain Marvel,’ set for 2018. The character’s casting has yet to be announced, but the film will be written by Nicole Perlman & Meg LeFauve, and ‘Selma’ director Ava DuVernay is reported to be under consideration to direct (though she may instead helm ‘Black Panther’).

Meanwhile, Marvel’s old rivals DC will pip them to the post with their ‘Wonder Woman’ solo movie scheduled for 2017, after Gal Gadot debuts the role in 2016′s ‘Batman V Superman: Dawn of Justice.’

Of course, we will never know what ‘The Avengers’ would be like with the cast  Disimilis has envisaged - but we can always dream.
