Avengers 2: Does Bruce Banner Help Create Ultron?

Although Tony Stark is assumed to build the titular robotic villain in ‘Avengers: Age of Ultron’ it looks as though Bruce Banner might also have a hand in his creation.

During an interview with Total Film, the Incredible Hulk himself hinted that he may have a hand in the creation of the nefarious Ultron.

“Banner’s been living in Stark Tower,” he said. “They’ve been working side by side and Bruce has his own lab now. He’s doing work that augments Tony’s own, which could lead to an experiment going wrong…”

Of course, it’s been assumed for some time that Tony Stark would create Ultron – unlike the comic books where he was actually created by Hank Pym. But this new interview does seem to suggest that Banner also plays a part.

And that might explain one of the more action-packed scenes from the recent trailers…

It’s no secret that fans have been dying to see Stark and Banner go head to head. And those scenes where Iron Man dons the Hulkbuster armour are truly breath-taking. Obviously, the reason Stark has to go toe-to-toe with Banner is because he’s Hulked out.

But what’s the reason for all that rage?

I can’t help thinking that Stark may feel Banner is somehow responsible for Ultron’s actions… or maybe he’s trying to shift the blame due to his own guilty conscience. And clearly, that’s made Banner pretty angry.

And it looks as though that’s becoming more of a problem in ‘Avengers: Age of Ultron’.

“He does feel more comfortable with himself,” Ruffalo explained. “His confidence is getting better. But, you know, that gets shaken. His ability to handle the Hulk really gets thrown into question in this film. The hard part is coming back. Hulk doesn’t want to cede his place. It’s much harder to come back from being Hulk than it is to get into him.”

Obviously, this ties into the scene of Banner stumbling through the woods looking both physically and metaphorically lost. And Ruffalo admits that there’s a lot more to Banner’s plight than just his anger management issues.

“I think there’s a whole other chapter we haven’t seen yet where you find the other nuances within him,” he said. “The battle of identity going on between him and Banner is all about establishing dominance. The only thing that Hulk is really afraid of is Banner. That’s an interesting dynamic.”

Quite how that plays on the big screen remains to be seen… but I get the feeling this is going to be an interesting film for Bruce Banner and The Hulk. And it might just set up the uneasy alliances for ‘Captain America: Civil War’.

But which side will Banner take? We’ll have to wait and see.

‘Avengers: Age of Ultron’ heads to cinemas on 24 April 2015.
