Avengers: Age of Ultron - Who Is Vision And Why Should We Care?

After months of waiting, we finally have a good look at The Vision – one of the more enigmatic characters from ‘Avengers: Age of Ultron’.

This brand-new character poster, released online by the folks at Marvel, gives us our best look yet at the iconic Marvel android… and he already looks rather awesome. Sporting the classic colour scheme in a look that comic books fans will love, it seems that Paul Bettany has finally made the transition from computer system to fearless robotic hero.

But who is The Vision? And why should we even care? For that, we’ll have to head back to the comic books…

Created by Marvel comic book maestros Joe Simon and Jack Kirby, the character known as The Vision was revamped by Stan Lee – taking the once-alien hero from the rather laughable planet of ‘Smokeworld’ – and turning him into an android.

Although he kept the original character’s colour scheme, the new Vision was an entirely different kind of hero.

Created by the villainous Ultron, he was originally made as a weapon against Ultron’s creator – Hank Pym. Tasked with leading The Avengers into a trap, he instead is convinced to aid the group of heroes in their fight against his robotic master.

Of course, it’s this version of The Vision that will be making his way to the big screen. And while he’s a new addition to the Marvel Cinematic Universe, he’s already had quite a history with Earth’s Mightiest Heroes – The Avengers.

After helping The Avengers to defeat Ultron, he quickly becomes part of the team… and even enters into a relationship with Wanda Maximoff – also known as The Scarlet Witch.

Of course, the Scarlet Witch will be appearing in the upcoming ‘Age of Ultron’. But it’s unknown whether or not the two will have much interaction, let alone beginning a rather ‘interesting’ relationship together.

But how closely will the big screen Vision follow the comic books?

At this stage, it’s all rather unclear… but Entertainment Weekly might have some answers.

“Ultron goes rogue, shreds Stark’s other artificial-intelligence program, J.A.R.V.I.S., and gives rise to his own awesome creation: the synthezoid known as the Vision (played by Paul Bettany, who previously voiced J.A.R.V.I.S.).”

In this sense, it looks as though The Vision’s origin will play out in much the same way as the comic books… and while Ultron likely creates him for the purpose of building an ally, it seems that J.A.R.V.I.S. might not be pitted against his master for very long.

But what else should we know about The Vision?

Well, his powers are largely technology based due to his android origins… and is described in ‘Avengers #57’ as being “every inch a human being—except that all of his bodily organs are constructed of synthetic materials.“

In the comic books, he possesses the ability to manipulate his density and cell structure, giving him the ability of flight as well as the ghostly power to pass through solid objects. And that yellow jewel on his forehead? That’s his Solar Jewel – allowing him to absorb the power of the sun in order to power himself. And that energy can even be discharged as optic beams.

But will these powers make it to the big screen?

For now, we have to wait and see… and there’s even speculation that the yellow jewel on The Vision’s forehead could be one of the Infinity Gems this time around – pursued by the mad Titan, Thanos.

I guess we’ll find out more soon enough…
