Avengers: Infinity War To Be Shot Entirely In IMAX

It looks as though Marvel is going all-out for ‘Avengers: Infinity War’ as they reveal that both parts will be filmed entirely with the new IMAX/ARRI 2D camera.

According to an official statement by directors Anthony and Joe Russo, the revolutionary new camera will give Marvel the tools they need to bring Phase Three to a close.

“The intent with the Infinity War films is to bring ten years of accumulative storytelling to an incredible climax,” they said. “We felt that the best way to exploit the scale and scope required to close out the final chapter of these three phases, was to be the first films shot entirely on the IMAX/ARRI Digital camera.”

The Russo Brothers – who directed ‘Captain America: The Winter Soldier’ - will capture both parts of ‘Avengers: Infinity War’ with the Alexa 65. And this marks the first time in history that a Hollywood movie has been shot entirely using an IMAX camera, exclusively in IMAX aspect ratio.

But this isn’t the first outing for the technology under the Marvel banner…

According to recent reports, the Russo Brothers will field the new camera during ‘Captain America: Civil War’, filming key action sequences with the camera before using it on the upcoming ‘Infinity War’.

“Over the years, IMAX has had the incredible good fortune to work with some of the world’s finest, most talented filmmakers, who continue to push the envelope both technically and creatively,” said CEO of IMAX Entertainment, Greg Foster.

“We could not be more excited to deepen our partnership with Joe and Anthony Russo, a pair of filmmakers we believe are next-generation trailblazers. Marvel’s Avengers franchise has become a global phenomenon and to have it pay off in this epic way using the IMAX/ARRI digital camera is the very definition of event movie-going.”

But what does this mean for ‘Infinity War’?

It’s easy to see that Marvel is going all-out for what is the culmination of the entire Marvel Cinematic Universe. Using cutting-edge technology combined with a 9 month back-to-back film shoot, it’s obvious that Marvel is serious about this movie.

And it’s likely to be the comic book event movie of the decade.

Will it be any good? For now, we’ll have to wait and see. But it looks as though Marvel is going all-in on this one.

‘Avengers: Infinity War Part One’ heads to cinemas on 27 April 2018.
