Avengers Trailer: Is That An Infinity Stone in Vision's Forehead?

We all know Marvel’s end-game. The Infinity War is coming, and the studio has been building toward for some time.

Four years ago we caught a glimpse of the Infinity Guantlet in ‘Thor’, then later that summer we saw our first infinity stone in the form of the Tessaract - the MacGuffin for ‘Captain America: The First Avenger’ and ‘Avengers Assemble’. We’ve seen three other infinity stones since, and here might be the fourth.

The Vision’s inclusion in ‘Avengers: Age of Ultron’ has got fans very excited and yesterday (4 March) when Marvel released the final trailer for the new film, we finally caught a glimpse of him.

Warning: Mild and potential spoilers follow.

While we won’t get into the character’s origins in detail, he is an android superhero with the ability to fly and phase through walls. He is also an artiificial intelligence, but one fighting for good while James Spader’s AI Ultron seeks to destory humanity.

So why are they opposing forces? The answer may lie in that hint of yellow embedded in Vision’s forehead. IT could be the soul stone, and it might be the reason this particular robot fights for forces of good.

If it is the soul stone, then that raises questions about the plot of Joss Whedon’s sequel. Many have speculated that the action will take us to the fictional African country of Wakanda, which in turn led many to believe Ultron will seek the fictional metal vibranium (the stuff used to make Cap’s shield) to create himself an indestructible body.

That may well be true, but what if the mining of vibranium in Wakanda also unearthed the soul stone? The ramifications of the stone’s importance to the plot run wide. Is Ultron in fact seeking a soul of his own while on his mission to kill us all?

Another possibility is that Thor could venture off-world to find the stone and help in The Vision’s creation at the presumed hands of Tony Stark. If he does this would fall in line with the recent confirmation that Idris Elba will be reprising his role as Asgardian sentry Heimdall.

The more we think about it, the more it makes sense that that is indeed the soul stone, which leaves the Marvel universe with one infinity stone unaccounted for. We’ve seen the Tessaract (currently in Asgard), the mind stone in Loki’s sceptre (which has plot importance in ‘Ultron’), the power stone in the form of ‘Thor: The Dark World’s Aether (likely the reality stone) and the purple power stone in ‘Guardians of the Galaxy’.

This leaves the time stone, which we can expect to appear in a future film ahead of ‘Avengers: Infinity War - Part 1’ in 2018. Which film though? We’ll have to wait and see.

'Avengers: Age of Ultron' is out on 23 April.
