Batman v Superman: Everything We Know About The New Wonder Woman

We’ve already been introduced to the new Man Of Steel. We’ve got a pretty good idea of what kind of Batman Ben Affleck is going to be. But Wonder Woman? She’s more of a mystery.

Perhaps the most iconic female superhero in comic-book and TV history, she’s yet to make a splash in the movies, so before she makes her debut in 2016’s ‘Batman V Superman: Dawn Of Justice’, let’s take a minute to find out just how wonderful she really is…

Hold up, who is Wonder Woman again? Good point, it’s been a while. Wonder Woman is the heroic alter-ego of Diana Prince, a warrior princess from the Amazon who also goes by the name of Princess Diana of Themyscira when she’s at home.

Sculpted by clay by the Queen of the Amazons (it says here), she was gifted the attributes of the gods: “Beautiful as Aphrodite, wise as Athena, swifter than Hermes and stronger than Hercules.” In other words, she’s super strong, super smart, super fast and also she has an invisible jet (just go with it).

I can see her kicking some ass. So who’s playing her? In December 2013, director Zack Snyder announced that Gal Gadot would be playing Wonder Woman in ‘Batman Vs Superman: Dawn Of Justice’.

Never heard of her. Well, if you’ve seen a ‘Fast & Furious’ movie in the last five years, you’ll have seen her most high-profile work to date as gearhead Gisele Yashar. You might have also seen her as Mark Wahlberg’s girlfriend in comedy ‘Date Night’ or as the beautiful Naomi in Tom Cruise action vehicle ‘Knight & Day’ (us neither).

As a user of the internet, I am indignant at this decision! Why wasn’t it Jaime Alexander/Katee Sackhoff/someone else I like? Hold your horses, because although former model Gal Gadot doesn’t have the most arresting of Hollywood CVs, she’s still got some seriously awesome credentials. Like Diana Prince, she’s beautiful – Gadot was named Miss Israel in 2004. Also like Diana Prince, she could probably make you cry like a little girl – Gadot served for two years as a soldier in the Israeli Defence Forces. She also loves motorbikes and - you already fancy her, don’t you?

Maybe a little bit. What’s she doing in this Batman <3 Superman movie then? It’s hard to say, because apart from the sole picture released from Comic-Con in July of Gadot in Wonder Woman costume, details of her role in the movie are scarce. With all that titular beefcake going head to head (and don’t forget Aquaman!), it’s not likely there will be too much room for Gadot to crack skulls, so expect a glorified cameo – enough to get fanboys salivating at the prospect of more Wonder Woman.

Will there be more Wonder Woman? She’s an integral part of the ‘Justice League’, which is what DC and Warner Bros have been building up to since ‘Man Of Steel’. She’ll have a major part in that movie, thought to be scheduled in for 2017 or 2018 (DC have block-booked several release dates over the next five years but they won’t say which movies they’re being reserved for, the spoilsports). Don’t bet against Gadot’s Wonder Woman having her own standalone movie before the decade is through. Is that enough Wonder Woman for you?

It’ll do for now. What does Gadot have to say for herself? She’s been quite outspoken thus far, which makes us like her more. When an Israeli journalist flat out said she was too skinny for the role, Gadot replied: “I represent the Wonder Woman of the new world. Breasts… anyone can buy for 9000 shekels and everything is fine. By the way, Wonder Woman is Amazonian, and historically accurate Amazonian women actually had only one breast. So, if I’d really go ‘by the book’, it’d be problematic.” Go Gal!

How come no one has tried to make a Wonder Woman before? They have, several times. In 2008, Warner Bros worked on a proposed early version of ‘Justice League’ that was to go into production before the writers’ strike. It got shelved, but before it did, Australian model-turned-actress (ain’t it always the way?) Megan Gale was cast as Wonder Woman – she even suffered the indignity of walking her last runway in full costume. Before that, Joss Whedon turned in a pitch and “put in a lot of leg work” for his take on a Wonder Woman movie, but Warners rejected it. Five years later, Whedon would direct ‘The Avengers’, the third most successful movie of all time. Somewhat vindicated, you might say.

Wasn’t there a Wonder Woman TV show? Famously. The Wonder Woman TV series ran for five years between 1975-1979, starring Lynda Carter as the eponymous heroine – it also had one of the greatest TV theme tunes ever. We never got to find out if that awesome theme tune would have been modernised for the new Wonder Woman TV reboot in 2011, because it never even made it to air; unsurprising when you see star Adrianne Palicki in full garb, looking like she’s wearing a ‘Wonder Woman’ Halloween costume.

What will Gal Gadot’s costume be like, then? For research. Research, of course. Take a look at the Comic-Con pic and you can see it’s a much more grounded approach.

The corset is still present and correct (and it’s far less low-cut than previous versions), complete with the eagle-shaped ‘W’ breastplate. Thigh high boots may not be the most comfortable footwear to fight crime in, but they look the part, as do the bullet-deflecting bracers and the bronze tiara. Oh, and check out the lasso holstered on her hip, although we doubt it’ll have the same effect as her old ‘lasso of truth’ (because in a world of supermen and alien generals and bat-shaped warriors, that would be ridiculous). And if you look heard enough, you can just make out her invisible jet in the background.

I will continue to look. Great. Don’t forget, ‘Batman V Superman: Dawn Of Justice’ – Wonder Woman’s movie debut – will be released in cinemas in March 2016.
