Batman v Superman: Henry Lennix Hails Affleck's American Caped Crusader

'Man of Steel' actor Henry Lennix, set to reprise his role of General Swannick in 'Batman V Superman: Dawn of Justice,' has praised Ben Affleck’s Batman - based first and foremost on his nationality.

Lennix (pictured above left) made the remarks in an interview with US radio station Vintage Sound 93.1 FM (quoted by Batman News), declaring of Affleck, “I think he’s going to be perfect.

“I’m especially excited that we’ve got an American actor here, that’s increasingly rare. The last guy, who did a great job, Christian Bale — is British.”

Lennix continues, “I think that when you’ve got somebody that doesn’t have to act like an American and embodies that ethos, if you will, then that gives him a head start.

"And knowing how intelligent and how artful that he is as a filmmaker and actor, I think he’s going to do a terrific job.”

A little awkwardly, Lennix would appear to be overlooking that our current incarnation of Superman, Henry Cavill, is also British.

We might also debate just how ‘increasingly rare’ the casting of American actors in superhero roles really is. As far as British superhero actors go, there’s Cavill, Andrew Garfield’s Spider-Man, and James McAvoy sharing the role of ‘X-Men’s Professor Xavier with Patrick Stewart.

The ‘X-Men’ franchise also features Brit Nicholas Hoult as Beast, Ian McKellen sharing the role of Magneto with Irish-German actor Michael Fassbender, and of course Australian Hugh Jackman as Wolverine.

Marvel Studios have, at present, one non-American superhero on their roll call, Australian Chris Hemsworth as Thor - plus another Brit, Tom Hiddleston, as his villainous brother Loki.

'Avengers: Age of Ultron' will introduce two more Brits to the Marvel Cinematic Universe, with Aaron Taylor-Johnson as Quicksilver and Paul Bettany (already part of the MCU as Tony Stark's computer JARVIS) becoming The Vision.

And, of course, ‘Batman V Superman: Dawn of Justice’ will introduce the first movie incarnation of Wonder Woman in the form of Israeli actress Gal Gadot.

We haven’t figured out the math, but it seems fair to say it’s about an even split of American/non-American actors as superheroes right now, given the true blue American status of the likes of Robert Downey Jr„ Chris Evans, Scarlett Johansson, Jeremy Renner, Jennifer Lawrence and so on.

Will being a natural born American give Ben Affleck’s Batman the edge he needs? Guess we’ll see once ‘Batman V Superman: Dawn of Justice’ arrives in March 2016.
