Batman V Superman’s Lex Luthor Is ‘Entirely Different’

It looks as though Jesse Eisenberg will be giving us a very different Lex Luthor in ‘Batman V Superman’… as he explains he’s nothing like Gene Hackman’s version.

During an interview with MTV, the 31-year-old Superman villain explained why his Lex Luthor is very different to the ones that have come before.

“No, it is an entirely different thing,” Eisenberg explained when asked if he’d taken inspiration from Gene Hackman’s Luthor. “The tone of that movie is so different, like that movie wouldn’t be made now.”

It may sound a little harsh at first, but I can see what he means – after all, the tone of ‘Batman V Superman’ is miles apart from the colourful antics of a Superman who still wore his pants on the outside.

And we can expect Luthor’s motivation to be a bit more realistic…

“The way we expect movies to be now is to have some kind of - I mean, it’s probably for the best - there’s some kind of psychological accuracy. That the person is coming from a place probably diagnosable in some way.”

Of course, Eisenberg couldn’t help lavishing praise upon writer Chris Terrio for his work on the character of Lex Luthor. But has he revealed anything new about ‘Batman V Superman’s big bad villain?

Not exactly…

“It’s a really great character,” he said. “It was written by this guy, Chris Terrio. He’s a phenomenal writer. He comes from a place of character. He loves my character in the same way I love my character. He put a lot of work into it. It’s a great character. There’s an emotional core to character. It’s not a silly villainous character.”

It certainly sounds as though the upcoming version of Lex Luthor aims to avoid the trappings of being a comic book villain – instead, focussing on far more realistic motives. And with an official synopsis giving us a glimpse into what that might be, it sounds as though Luthor is going to be quite a match for the Man of Steel.

“Fearing the actions of a god-like Super Hero left unchecked, Gotham City’s own formidable, forceful vigilante takes on Metropolis’s most revered, modern-day savior, while the world wrestles with what sort of hero it really needs. And with Batman and Superman at war with one another, a new threat quickly arises, putting mankind in greater danger than it’s ever known before.”

‘Batman V Superman: Dawn of Justice’ heads to cinemas on 25 March 2016.
