Bebop and Rocksteady Revealed On Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles 2 Set

Paparazzi shots from the set of ‘Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles 2′ have revealed classic Turtles villains Bebop and Rocksteady and they’re quite different from how fans of the 80s cartoon will remember them.

The oafish henchmen of Turtles nemesis Shredder were human-animal hybrids in the cartoon series which ran from 1987-1996, but it looks like they’ll be introduced in their human form in the upcoming sequel to the 2014 live action film.

Gary Anthony Williams plays Bebop, the thug who gets spliced with a warthog, while Irish WWE wrestler Sheamus is Rocksteady, the leather-clad hoodlum whose destiny lies in being spliced with a rhino.

The new look of the characters may come as a surprise to those not au fait with the backstory of the henchmen created specifically for the 1987 cartoon.

Turtles co-creator Peter Laird devised the characters at the behest of action figure manufacturers Playmates who wanted more characters to release around the show, and was asked to make them mutants by the show’s producer.

Bebop and Rocksteady were introduced as dimwitted members of a street gang working for Shredder, before they were spliced with animals stolen from New York zoo in a bid to create foes who were a physical match for the Turtles.

Unfortunately, although they were physically enhanced, they remained pretty dumb and spent most of the series being verbally abused by Shredder and Krang for their oafish behaviour.

The pair were originally due to be introduced in the 2014 film, but it was decided they’d be saved for the sequel. We expect to see the pair transform into their half-animal forms at some point in the film.

Also returning for the follow up is Shredder, albeit with a new actor in the role. Brian Tee replaces Tohoru Masamune as the mysterious leader of The Foot, and judging from further photos from the set (above), we’re going to see a much more traditional looking Shredder this time, instead of the giant, half-robot version we got in the first film.

The sequel, rumoured to be titled ‘Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Half Shell’, will be released in 2016. Watch a trailer for the first film below.
