"The news I can give you right now is that it's a work in progress," he said.

"We're working on the script right now, and we all have high hopes that it's going to move forward as we planned. But yes, we're all excited about it, and we're hoping to see it come out very soon as well."

Fans of the original will be pleased to know that Gavin O'Connor is potentially back to direct the sequel, with Affleck reprising his role as Christian Wolff.

Released by Warner Bros and written by Bill Dubuque, it grossed £130 million worldwide and was praised for Affleck's performance and the film's stylish action sequences.

Affleck has had more good news recently, with psychological thriller Deep Water also starring Ana de Armas finally making its way to the big screen after being delayed twice.

Williams spoke about The Accountant 2 ahead of the release of his latest movie Blacklight.

He kept his cards close to his chest and offered little in terms of an actual release date, but seeing as the project was originally supposed to be in development in 2017, some news is good news.
