Big Hero 6 Animator Pays Perfect Homage To Studio Ghibli

A Disney animator has constructed a stunning homage to the famed Studio Ghibli animation studio as his way of showing just how influential Hayao Miyazaki has been on his career.

Jin Kim, a character design supervisor at Walt Disney Animation Studios, paid tribute to ‘My Neighbour Totoro’ by having ‘Big Hero 6’s’ characters recreate a famous pose from the iconic Japanese film. You check out Kim’s homage below.

On its own it’s pretty dull stuff. However when it’s coupled with the following image, which is taken directly from ‘My Neighbour Totoro’, you’ll instantly see why Kim’s image is pure class.

What a bloody lovely gesture. Kudos to the folks over at Kotaku for spotting Kim’s drawing, which was actually originally posted online back in November and utilises ‘Big Hero 6’s’ Hiro Hamada and Baymax perfectly.

Japanese press originally started to draw attention to Kim’s picture, and then Studio Ghibli aficionados from across the world wide web instantly began to heap praise on the touching tribute too. If you fancy seeing some more of Jin Kim’s work then you should probably head over to his Tumblr page. It’s rather spiffing.

‘Big Hero 6’ will finally be released in the United Kingdom on 30 January, 2015. It has so far been met with splendid reviews that have for the most part praised its humour and heart, while its box office total of $428.3 million and counting is nothing to sniff at too.

Studio Ghibli are regarded as one of the most innovative and influential animated studios in the history of moving pictures. Its most prominent filmmaker is Hayao Miyazaki, who has overseen the likes of ‘Castle in the Sky’, ‘Kiki’s Delivery Service’, ‘Spirited Away’, ‘Princess Mononoke’ and 1988’s ‘My Neighbour Totoro’.

Both Disney and Studio Ghibli had reason to celebrate last week, after it was announced that ‘Big Hero 6’ and ‘The Tale of the Princess Kaguya’ were nominated for the Academy Award’s Best Animated Film accolade. We’ll see if one of them is able sneak the gong when the winner is announced at next month’s ceremony.
