Say Hello To The New British Spider-Man

Relatively unknown British actor Tom Holland will play Spider-Man in Sony Pictures’ upcoming film reboot. It's his first major leading role.

The young star, who appeared in ‘The Impossible’ (as the son of Naomi Watts and Ewan McGregor) and in the stage version of 'Billy Elliot', apparently underwent a series of “complex screen tests” to land the coveted part of Peter Parker’s alter ego.

Producers Kevin Feige and Amy Pascal have also picked an up-and-coming director in the shape of Jon Watts for Sony’s reboot.

Watts’ CV is currently very limited, with upcoming thriller, ‘Cop Car’, his most recent film, although Pascal and Feige insist he went through  “multiple meetings" with the pair and the studio to land the gig.

Feige said: “As with James Gunn, Joss Whedon, and the Russo brothers, we love finding new and exciting voices to bring these characters to life.  We spent a lot of time with Jon and find his take and work inspiring.”

Pascal said about Holland: “Sony, Marvel, Kevin and I all knew that for Peter Parker, we had to find a vibrant, talented young actor capable of embodying one of the most well-known characters in the world.  With Tom, we’ve found the perfect actor to bring Spider-Man’s story into the Marvel Cinematic Universe.”

This new take on Spider-Man will be yet another reboot of the franchise. The first three films starred Tobey Maguire as the webslinger, before Andrew Garfield replaced him in the title role for two ‘Amazing Spider-Man’ films.

His Spidey films were considered box office disappointments, prompting Marvel Studios boss Kevin Feige to step in and help produce the latest version.

He has traditionally only been involved in the Disney-owned Marvel properties, which include ‘The Avengers’ and ‘Iron Man’. Sony own the rights to ‘Spider-Man’.

The new ‘Spider-Man’ will be released in IMAX and 3D on July 28, 2017. There’s no word yet on how many films the team are signed on for.
