Bruce Campbell and Lucy Lawless To Reunite In TV's Ash Vs The Evil Dead

Longtime fans of Bruce Campbell have even greater cause to be excited about upcoming ‘Evil Dead’ spin-off TV show ‘Ash Vs The Evil Dead’ now, as it has been announced that Campbell is to be joined in his battle against the Deadites by none other than Xena herself, Lucy Lawless.

New Zealand actress Lawless played the title role in ‘Xena: Warrior Princess’ from 1995 to 2001, having previously debuted the role in ‘Hercules: the Legendary Journeys.’ Both shows were produced by ‘The Evil Dead’ team of Sam Raimi and Rob Tapert (the latter of whom is now Lawless’s husband), and Campbell had a recurring guest role as the duplicitous thief Autolycus.

Lawless’s Xena and Campbell’s Autolycus had a tendency to butt heads, so fans will be pleased to learn it looks like a similar dynamic is on the cards for ‘Ash Vs The Evil Dead,’ as Deadline report that Lawless will co-star as a “mysterious” and “myopic” figure named Ruby, who is also fighting the good fight against the rising threat of the Deadites, but is under the unfortunate misconception that Campbell’s Ash himself is to blame for it all.

As well as Campbell (who will also serve as executive producer with Raimi and Tapert), Lawless joins previously announced cast members Ray Santiago, Dana DeLorenzo and Jill Marie Jones.

Speaking to Blastr, Campbell spoke highly of his once and future co-star: “We just added her to our cast, and I got to tell you, I couldn’t be happier. Some actors you work with and you know that you’re going to fail the chemistry test. There are some that you know you won’t fail it. She’s great; I worked with her a lot in the Xena days, and it’s great to have her on Ash vs. Evil Dead.”

Other small screen roles for Lawless include ‘Spartacus’ (also produced by Raimi and Tapert) and ‘Battlestar Galactica.’ She also recently appeared in Marvel’s ‘Agents of SHIELD.’

‘Ash Vs The Evil Dead’ will pick up where ‘Army of Darkness’ left off (albeit more than two decades later), following on from the US ending in which Ash returned safely to the present day, as opposed to the alternate ending used on the European cut which saw Ash accidentally transported to a post-apocalyptic future.

Quite how the events of the 2013 ‘Evil Dead’ reboot will affect the story, if at all, is unclear at this point.

Unusually for modern TV, the ten episodes of ‘Ash Vs The Evil Dead’ will only be 30 minutes long, though as the series is being produced for US subscription network Starz – home of Raimi and Tapert’s notoriously graphic ‘Spartacus’ – expectations are high that the show will not hold back on the gore that fans have come to expect from ‘The Evil Dead.’

'Ash Vs The Evil Dead' is scheduled to air in the US from this October.
