Bughuul Is Back In Sinister 2 Trailer

Three years on from ‘Sinister,’ which saw Ethan Hawke’s family come under attack from a demonic entity discovered via 8mm films of murder scenes, the dreaded Bughuul is out to claim more souls in ‘Sinister 2.’

This time, in place of crime writer Hawke’s suburban family we have Shannon Sossamon as the mother of twin boys in a rural farmhouse, who find themselves caught in Bughuul’s bloodthirsty sights.

As the original was among the most well-received horror movies of 2012, hopes have been high for the sequel… but after this trailer, we’d be lying if we claimed to be bursting with optimism.

There's no avoiding the sense that we've seen it all before - and we don't just mean the opening moments taken from 1968 classic 'Night of the Living Dead.'

Production company Blumhouse may be the most successful and prolific horror filmmakers out there right now, but their output is getting worryingly samey. Perhaps we’re getting a bit tired of the same routine, coming so soon after the trailer for ‘Insidious Chapter 3,’ but this just feels like jump scare, after jump scare, after jump scare - and it all just feels rather tedious.

Indeed, with the emphasis on ghostly apparitions haunting a young boy, this in many respects feels more like another ‘Insidious’ than a follow-up to ‘Sinister,’ which was primarily told from the perspective of Hawke’s adult character.

Even so, just as a book shouldn’t be judged by its cover. a film shouldn’t be judged by its trailer - and there’s still definite cause for optimism. The original ‘Sinister’ seemed similarly generic at a glance (not helped by its rather nondescript title), but it proved to be considerably more interesting and tense than might have been anticipated.

While original director Scott Derrickson has not returned to the big chair this time around (being too busy in pre-production on Marvel’s ‘Doctor Strange’), he is once again co-producing with Jason Blum and co-writing with C Robert Cargill.

Replacing Derrickson as director is Ciarán Foy, filmmaker behind 2012′s ‘Citadel,’ a comparatively under-seen but distinctly above-average Irish horror movie which boasts genuine chills.

We can but hope that ‘Sinister 2′ ultimately delivers similarly potent results, because right now it’s looking rather been-there, done-that…

‘Sinister 2′ opens on 21 August.
