Burt Reynolds is auctioning off a wealth of his personal memorabilia next month following reports that he is struggling financially.

The 78-year-old Hollywood legend is planning to sell off more than 600 items in an auction called ‘Property From the Life and Career of Burt Reynolds’ organised by Julien’s Auctions, which will take place at the Palms Casino in Las Vegas.

Among the huge haul of items is his red jacket and embroidered shirt he wore in ‘Smokey and the Bandit II’, a football helmet from ‘The Longest Yard’ and a pair of monogrammed boots from the 1996 movie ‘Striptease’, in which he starred alongside Demi Moore.

As well as a number of vehicles – including a 1997 Dodge Ram pick-up customised with a portrait of Reynolds as ‘The Bandit’ – artwork and sports collectibles, his Best Actor Emmy for ‘Evening Shade’ and his Best Supporting Actor Golden Globe for ‘Boogie Nights’ will be going under the hammer too.

There are also a number of his personal football trophies from Palm Beach High School up for sale, along with a pair of boxing gloves signed for Reynolds by Muhammad Ali, signed baseballs, stetson hats and collections of belt buckles.

For the fan on a budget, you could pick up a pair of Reynolds’ leather chaps, with a starting bid of $100.

In the foreword from the catalogue, Reynolds says: “I’ve collected so many things that I truly adore but at this stage in my life I find it very difficult to manage them all.

“The fact of the matter is that it truly is the time to downsize and for these items that I have loved over the years find new homes where they can be cared for and appreciated.”

At one time Reynolds was among Hollywood’s most bankable stars, but he’s been dogged by financial issues since the mid-90s.

An extravagant lifestyle coupled with his divorce from actress Loni Anderson and an investment in a chain of Florida restaurants which went sour resulted in him filing for Chapter 11 bankruptcy in 1996.

And it would appear that Reynolds has been struggling with money and health troubles every since.

He underwent back surgery in 2009, followed by a quintuple heart bypass the following year.

In 2011, Associated Press reported that he was facing repossession of his Florida home, with his mortgage company Merrill Lynch suing him to get back a sum of $1.2 million, claiming that he had not offered up a mortgage payment in nearly a year on the 12,500 square foot property.

Though still occasionally appearing on TV and in movies – he featured in a film called ‘Pocket Listing’ with Rob Lowe earlier this year – he’s now also teaching acting classes in Florida.

The auction takes place on December 11 and 12, and you can place online bids here.
