Captain America: Civil War Directors Sign For Sony Pictures

It looks as though Marvel directors Anthony and Joe Russo  have signed a three-year deal at SonyPictures. But does this mean they’ll take on Spider-Man?

According to TheWrap, the Marvel directing duo has signed up with rival studio, Sony Pictures… but that’s not necessarily a bad thing.

“Joe and Anthony Russo have entered into a three-year first-look deal for feature films with Sony Pictures Entertainment,” they said. “The news comes after Marvel and Sony announced a partnership that would introduce a new Spider-Man into the Marvel Cinematic Universe, before headlining his own solo film.”

Of course, the Russos joining forces with Sony Pictures is quite a big deal. After all, they brought ‘Captain America: The Winter Soldier’ to the big screen and are likely to follow up with another smash hit in the form of ‘Civil War’. And after the studios negotiated a deal to share the ‘Spider-Man’ rights, it seems that Marvel and Sony are now practically inseparable.

But what will the Russos be doing at Sony?

Although details remain unclear at this point, it certainly sounds as though they may be involved in the upcoming ‘Spider-Man’ reboot… or at the very least, the on-going Spidey franchise.

“The Russos are directing ‘Captain America: Civil War’, where the new Spidey is expected to make his first appearance before his own film is released in 2017,” they explain. And while Drew Goddard was recently linked to the Marvel webslinger, it’s certainly not a huge leap to see the Russos in contention for the job, too.

“We’re thrilled to make a home at Sony Pictures, and to be partnering with the entire team,” said the directing duo. “The studio has created an environment that is not only collaborative, but truly filmmaker-friendly and we’re excited to begin developing both new and ambitious material with them.”

Whether or not that turns out to be the new ‘Spider-Man’ movie remains to be seen… and for now, we’ll just have to wait and see.

The all-new ‘Spider-Man’ movie heads to cinemas on 28 July 2017.
