Captain America 2: Cancelled Hawkeye Cameo Revealed

The directors of ‘Captain America: The Winter Soldier’ have revealed that Jeremy Renner’s ‘Avengers’ character Hawkeye nearly had a cameo in their Marvel sequel, but it was cut due to “a conflict with Renner’s schedule”.

Spoilers for ‘Captain America: The Winter Soldier’ ahead.

Joe Russo, who co-directed the film with his brother Anthony, explained on the Screen Rant Underground podcast that the cool-sounding cameo would have happened in the film after Captain America was declared a fugitive by S.H.I.E.L.D.

“We were trying to complicate the relationship between Cap and his S.H.I.E.L.D agent friends. If Hawkeye got a call from S.H.I.E.L.D saying Captain America is a fugitive, would he listen to that call or not listen to that call?” Russo said.

"Hawkeye was chasing Cap through Washington D.C. There was an awesome sequence where they confronted each other in a ravine on the outskirts of D.C. and Hawkeye was shooting a series of arrows closing in on Cap, Cap closing in on him. And then Cap took him down and he realised for the first time that Hawkeye was trying to trick S.H.I.E.L.D.

"He whispered something into Cap’s ear that Cap had a tracker on his suit and to punch Hawkeye to make it look real, because there was a Quinjet hovering above where they were watching the feedback back at S.H.I.E.L.D.”

Scarlett Johansson, another member of the Avengers without their own solo series, played a huge part in ‘Captain America 2’, but it appears there wasn’t enough room to squeeze another hero into the mix.

What Are Marvel’s Five New Films?

"There’s a million iterations of films, and especially when dealing with Marvel movies where characters can come in or come out during the creative process,” explains Russo.

"And you keep working and working like a Rubik’s Cube till you find the right configuration where everything lines up. So even though we lost that sequence, I think we may have streamlined the movie and made it a little bit more propulsive."

Renner has already played Hawkeye (AKA Clint Barton) twice in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, once in an uncredited cameo in ’Thor’, and then again in ’The Avengers’ where he spent a lot of the film acting as a stooge for Loki.

He’s been vocal about his disappointment with his Marvel part so far saying, “At the end of the day, 90% of the movie, I’m not the character I signed on to play. I’m literally in there for two minutes, and then all of a sudden…All I could really work on was the physical part of it all, because that didn’t change.”

Hawkeye has been rumoured to have a big part in ‘Captain America 3’ which the Russos are scheduled to direct for release in 2016. Renner told Collider: “There are rumblings of [a Hawkeye appearance in] ‘Captain America 3’. I don’t know what’s going to happen there. I’ve got to find the time, man. I’m trying to stay home and I can’t.”

Hawkeye is said to have an expanded part in Joss Whedon’s upcoming ‘Avengers’ sequel next year too.

It sounds like the directing siblings are already fans of Hawkeye, so we wouldn’t get too comfy at home Jeremy.
