Cate Blanchett Reveals She's Had 'Many' Relationships With Women

Cate Blanchett may be drawing from some of her own experiences in her new film, in which she plays a married woman falling for another woman in 1950s New York.

The Australian star dropped the revelation during an interview with Variety magazine, when discussing her role in Todd Haynes’ new movie ‘Carol’.

Asked if it was her first 'turn as a lesbian’, she replied: “On film – or in real life?”

Pressed on whether she’d had any past relationships with women, she said 'Yes, many times’, but did not elaborate on the matter.

The movie is based on Patricia Highsmith’s 1952 romance novel 'The Price of Salt’ which caused much scandal when it was published.

It follows Carol, the married protagonist who falls for a younger shop-girl, played by Rooney Mara, at the New York department store they both work in.

Blanchett added that she’d consumed 'a lot of girl-on-girl books from the period’ for her preparation for the role.

“I think there are a lot of people that exist like [Carol] who don’t feel the need to shout things from the rafters,” she said, adding 'it’s not Blue Is The Warmest Colour’, referring to the Palme d'Or-winning coming of age drama known for its explicit scenes.

Blanchett is married to Andrew Upton, the artistic director of the Sydney Theatre Company, and has three sons and a daughter.

Speaking later in the interview about the controversy over equal pay for male and female actors, she said: “We have to push forward. What industry has parity pay for women? None. Why would we expect this industry to be any different?”
