20th Century Fox is moving forward with plans for an ‘X-Men’ spin-off movie starring Channing Tatum as Gambit.

Deadline reports that Josh Zetumer, best known for the Robocop reboot, will be writing the script with ‘X-Men: Days of Future Past’s Simon Kinberg and Lauren Shuler Donner on board as producers.

Zetumer will be working from a story treatment written by veteran Marvel Comics writer Chirs Claremont, who created the character in 1990 with Jim Lee.

A well-loved character thanks in large part to the 1990s ‘X-Men’ animated series, Gambit has the power to charge objects with kinetic energy, often playing cards.

This won’t be the first time the character has appeared on the big screen however. Taylor Kitsch played the mutant, real name Remy LeBeau, in 2009’s ‘X-Men Origins: Wolverine’, but like everyone involved in the series we like to pretend that film didn’t happen.

The spin-off probably won’t mark Tatum’s debut as the character, he will first appear in 2016’s ‘X-Men: Apocalypse’ which starts filming next year.

Fox’s Gambit film forms part of their continuing plans to expand the ‘X-Men’ film universe ‘Avengers’ style. Only Hugh Jackman’s Wolverine has had a film to himself since the franchise began in 2000, but soon ‘Deadpool’ and ‘Gambit’ will as well.
