Chris Evans: Captain America Is “Probably A Virgin”

If there’s one thing Captain America is as renowned for as his physical prowess, it’s his fine, upstanding, very old-fashioned sense of morals and decency.

As Steve Rogers, he was a scrawny weakling, and most likely not much of a lady’s man, prior to being scientifically transformed into the perfect human specimen. Subsequently, Cap’s only ever had one love interest we know of: Peggy Carter, as played by Hayley Atwell in 2011′s ‘Captain America: the First Avenger’ - and all indications are the relationship never got further than a single kiss.

Inevitably, this has led some more imaginative fans to speculate as to what this might mean for Cap’s private life - and evidently actor Chris Evans has given the matter some thought too.

Pondering the matter with Entertainment Weekly, Evans laughs, “It’s funny when you think about it… he’s probably a virgin!  I don’t know when it would’ve happened.”

To the suggestion that he might always have had a liason with a showgirl from the USO tour in ‘Captain America: the First Avenger,’ Evans concedes, “he was on tour. That’s true. Maybe one of those girls blew his mind.

“He’s probably just a good guy. He was probably holding out for Peggy Carter and he’s a little more old-fashioned in that sense. These are a lot of things that I think are giant conflicts, but they’re also very personal conflicts.

“He’s a very human guy. That’s why I like him.”

Indeed, as a very traditional all-American boy scout, it does seem very likely that Cap is strictly a one-woman man - even though said woman has, in the Marvel Cinematic Universe chronology, long since reached old age whilst he’s still as young as he was in the 1940s.

There have certainly been no direct hints of any romance in Cap’s life since. His relationship with Scarlett Johansson’s Black Widow has remained entirely professional, although they did briefly get a little up close and personal whilst undercover in ‘Captain America: the Winter Soldier,’ much to his discomfort.

As for his relationships with the other Avengers… well, as far as we’re aware it’s all platonic, although there’s a great deal of fan-created art and fiction out there might imagine otherwise.

However, Evans does hint that Cap seeks a close personal bond, and may be on his way to finding it:

“It’s certainly what he wants, but Cap puts what he wants last. That’s his M.O. And I think for so long he just refuses to bleed on people. So it’s hard to explore a guy who doesn’t want to make waves with his own personal conflict. He’s always trying to help the greater good.

“That’s why it’s kind of exciting to look forward to Cap 3. I think we really scratched the surface on something great and I think there’s just so much to explore. Not just with the evolution of myself and [Anthony] Mackie’s character, but the reconnection with Bucky [Barnes, the Winter Soldier], and ultimately a relationship with a woman.”

Evans doesn’t hint as to just who this woman might be, but a likely candidate would seem to be Agent 13, played by Emily VanCamp in ‘Captain America: the Winter Soldier.’ In the comics, she was the niece of Peggy Carter; an on-off romance with Cap ensued, and it has been suggested the character will be developed further in future films.

Well, it’s no spoiler to reveal Cap doesn’t get any romance in ‘Avengers: Age of Ultron,’ in cinemas now; let’s see if that changes when ‘Captain America: Civil War’ opens this time next year.
