Chris Pine and Zachary Quinto Join Star Trek 4

It looks as though Kirk and Spock have already signed on for another 5 year mission… as Chris Pine and Zachary Quinto are confirmed for ‘Star Trek 4’.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, both Chris Pine and Zachary Quinto have signed up for the next ‘Star Trek’ movie… and it seems they’ve negotiated some rather big raises.

“The studio behind Star Trek Beyond quietly has locked up two key players for a potential fourth instalment,” they explain. “Sources say Chris Pine has scored about $6 million [for the upcoming ‘Star Trek 3’] as he and Zachary Quinto have granted an option for a fourth instalment of the rebooted franchise as Paramount renegotiated their deals.”

Of course, ‘Star Trek’ fans are bound to be pleased – after all, many may have bemoaned the plotline of ‘Star Trek Into Darkness’, but Pine and Quinto have proven rather popular crew of the USS Enterprise.

But what does this mean for ‘Star Trek 4’?

Other than the fact that it’s just become a bit more expensive for the folks at Paramount Pictures, little else is known about the upcoming sequel. In fact, this is the first hint that another sequel is even on the cards.

“When the original cast — Pine, Saldana, Zachary Quinto, Karl Urban, Simon Pegg, Anton Yelchin and John Cho — signed on for the movie that re-launched the franchise in 2009, they did so with options for two sequels,” explains THR. “Despite the fact that studios often will give stars big new deals in case of success, no re-negotiations took place for 2013’s Star Trek Into Darkness.”

Instead, the cast of the rebooted ‘Star Trek’ franchise are said to have only received nominal raises that were part of their original contract… but with that contract due to come to an end, it’s time to start throwing money at their stars to keep them on board.

And that’s why Pine and Quinto have now signed on for the fourth film.

But it seems it wasn’t exactly plain sailing…

“Paramount was again only looking to give nominal raises based on the original contracts, but some of the stars and their representatives argued that seven years had passed since the deals were struck back in 2007.”

Of course, Chris Pine and Zoe Saldana have gone on to increase their star power through films such as ‘Jack Ryan: Shadow Recruit’ and Marvel’s ‘Guardians of the Galaxy’… and it looks as though the studio were forced to concede.

Either way, it seems that we can look forward to another ‘Star Trek’ movie after all… presumably, as long as ‘Star Trek Beyond’ performs well at the box office.

But what will it be about? For now, we’ll have to wait and see.

‘Star Trek 3’ heads to cinemas on 8 July 2016.
