Chris Pine Thinks Simon Pegg Is Perfect For Star Trek 3

After the shock announcement that Simon Pegg will co-write ‘Star Trek 3’, it looks as though Captain Kirk himself thinks his crewmate is the perfect choice.

It looks as though ‘Star Trek 3’ has had a tough time getting off the ground… and with the high-profile exit of writer Roberto Orci, it’s up to Simon Pegg to give it more power. But can he inject the upcoming sequel with a bit more oomph? It looks as though Chris Pine is happy to see him take on the script… even if Scotty might get a bit more screen time.

During an interview with MTV’s Josh Horowitz, the 34-year-old ‘Star Trek’ captain revealed that he’s more than happy with Paramount’s decision… but will Scotty get more screen time?

“We are worried,” he joked. “Vast, vast Simon Pegg monologues… he sent an e-mail to all of us and we’re all really excited. I think what we enjoy about it is that we have a laugh, and we want to make sure that that’s still kind of embedded in there so to have Simon writing it is the perfect, perfect fit.”

Of course, Simon Pegg has been a lifelong sci-fi fan… and is well-known for his geek credentials. Having co-written the Cornetto Trilogy alongside Edgar Wright, he’s certainly no stranger to scriptwriting.

But will his version of ‘Star Trek 3’ be any good?

Well, it can’t be any worse than Roberto Orci’s script… which was reportedly turned in before he was removed as director and subsequently left as writer, remaining only on the project as a producer at this stage.

And I can’t help thinking that it’s all for the best. After the darker, gritty tones of ‘Star Trek Into Darkness’, I can’t help thinking that the franchise could do with returning to its slightly cheesier roots. And with Pegg’s history in comedy, perhaps he’s the right person to give the script a few more laughs.

As for what the story will be about, we’ll have to wait and see. But expect some gripping scenes for good old Scotty.

‘Star Trek 3’ heads to cinemas on 8 July 2016.
