Chris Weitz Talks Star Wars Spin-Off

‘Star Wars’ spin-off writer Chris Weitz has opened up about the first non-saga movie… and tells ‘Star Wars’ fans to expect everything.

It’s no secret that Gary Whitta – the original writer of the first ‘Star Wars’ spin-off – sent in his first draft at the end of last year. But while Whitta has officially finished his time on the script, another writer has taken over – Chris Weitz.

And he’s already been rather vocal about the project…

During an interview with SlashFilm, the ‘Star Wars’ writer explained what fans should expect from the first ever spin-off…

“They need to expect everything because it’s Star Wars,” he said. “They have to. If I don’t do that I’m failing in my job.”

Of course, joining the galaxy far, far away is quite an undertaking… and Chris Weitz explains exactly what the project means to him – echoing Gary Whitta’s sentiments about the ‘Star Wars’ saga.

“I saw Star Wars when I was 7 and it was a formative experience in my life, let alone in the notion of filmmaking,” he said. “I’m probably only working on this stuff because I did have that experience then. But it completely possessed me when I was a child and it was a huge part of my kind of emotional make up. So I tried to be as cool as possible in these meetings while still being aware if I got the assignment I was going to be able to work on something I’ve been dreaming of doing.”

But with two writers now contributing to the project, how much of Gary Whitta’s script will remain? There’s already been some discussion about how this might work… and Weitz gives us his own explanation.

“Well I think it still is the core,” he said. “But in terms of… in a weird way, it was like meeting for any assignment. Go in, talk about how you work and talk about the idea, but of course there was [a] huge security component to it. I wasn’t able to see the script until kind of after I was brought on board.”

Of course, this doesn’t exactly tell us much. But it sounds as though Whitta’s core concept will remain the same. Quite how much changes between now and when the film reaches the big screen remains to be seen.

“There’s a very strong structure from Gary’s work and that’s a huge advantage to me,” he added. “But just like with Cinderella, it’s a director’s medium so it’s really about my making what Gareth needs to do his film.”

What will the spin-off be about? For the time being, your guess is as good as mine. But I can’t help feeling incredibly excited about this one.

The first ‘Star Wars’ spin-off heads to cinemas on 16 December 2016.
