Christian Bale: I'm Jealous Of Ben Affleck Playing Batman

Christian Bale has been speaking about Batman and how he felt when he first learned that Ben Affleck was to play the role he enjoyed for seven years.

Speaking to Empire Magazine Bale said: “I’ve got to admit initially, even though I felt that it was the right time to stop, there was always a bit of me going, ‘Oh go on… Let’s do another.’”

“So when I heard there was someone else doing it,” he continued, “there was a moment where I just stopped and stared into nothing for half an hour.”

Bale played the Dark Knight for three films - more than any other actor - however Affleck is likely to star in more having signed a multi-film contract with Warner Bros that starts with 2016’s ‘Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice’ and extends to two ‘Justice League’ movies and a solo ‘Batman feature… at least.

The actor also admitted his jealousy that someone else was playing the part he clearly enjoyed. “I’m 40,” he said. “The fact that I’m jealous of someone else playing Batman… I think I should have gotten over it by now.

“I haven’t spoken with Ben, but I emailed him offering bits of advice that I learned the hard way. I would imagine he is doing everything he can to avoid anything what I did.”

Amusingly Bale was also asked how Batman and Moses – his character in forthcoming biblical epic ‘Exodus: Gods and Kings’ – are similar. “It’s a little embarrassing to compare Moses to Batman,” he laughed.

"There are similarities, you know, tragic beginning and then a heroic future. But Moses is a little more violent. I’m sure if there’d been guns around at that time, Bruce Wayne might have had a chance."
