Christoph Waltz Denies Playing SPECTRE Boss

Directly confronted with the speculation that he will portray the new arch-villain in upcoming James Bond movie ‘SPECTRE,’ Christoph Waltz has flatly denied the rumours - but has done so in such a way that only leaves us with more questions.

Asked outright by Collider if his character was the head of SPECTRE, Waltz laughed and responded, amiably yet concisely, “No, no - it’s actually more interesting than that.”

With this extremely vague hint coming so soon after Sam Mendes’ insistence that the title ‘SPECTRE’ might not mean exactly what we might think, Bond fan brains are bound to be working overtime trying to put the pieces together.

Still, one important thing to note here is that Waltz was not asked whether or not his character was Blofeld specifically - meaning that’s still a possibility.

Who’s to say ‘SPECTRE’ might not take a ‘Casino Royale’-ish approach to 007’s nemesis, showing us the man before he became the character we know and love?

Of course, there remains the possibility that casting Waltz - who always seemed a plausible choice for the role of Blofeld - was in fact a spot of clever misdirection, and another actor might in fact be taking on the role. In which instance, the two most likely candidates for Blofeld would seem to be either the much younger Andrew Scott, or - in what would be an interesting twist - Monica Bellucci.

Indeed, a fan theory supporting the notion that Bellucci may in fact be Blofeld is already coming together, as Collider point out that her character’s announced name, Sciarra, is taken from a province of Sicily "named with a word denoting a volcanic area" - which could be a subtle allusion to SPECTRE’s infamous volcano base in ‘You Only Live Twice.’ (We might add that, translated directly into English, Sciarra means "fight/brawl.")

We might also note that Daniel Craig recently joked - in an interview given prior to the big title reveal of Bond 24 - “I am happy for f***ing exploding volcano lairs,” before going on to remark, “If Blofeld turned up again, it wouldn’t be a bad thing.

Could all this be taken to imply that we will indeed see SPECTRE set up shop in a volcano, possibly with a female Blofeld clutching a white cat? Or are we letting our imaginations get the better of us?

Either way, given that ‘SPECTRE’ is only a week into production ahead of its November 2015 release date, it seems likely we’re in for eleven months of heavy rumour and speculation. Let’s just hope things don’t get too out of hand - for, as the makers of ‘Star Trek Into Darkness’ can testify, pulling a major bait-and-switch over an iconic villain can potentially turn the fans against you.

'SPECTRE' will land in UK cinemas on 6 November 2015.
