Cinderella: Kenneth Branagh Reveals Fun Easter Egg You Probably Missed (Exclusive)

Like the original animated film, the new live action ‘Cinderella’ features a supporting cast of mice, but unlike the original film, the mice don’t talk.

They do squeak though and you’d be forgiven for thinking it was just a load of gibberish. But director Kenneth Branagh has revealed that the mice scenes in the film were recorded by actual actors from a carefully written script.

“We have a secret mouse script. We scripted all mouse scenes, [screenwriter] Chris Weitz and myself. They were all recorded by actors,” explains Branagh in our exclusive video above.

“There are real lines in there, so the squeaks that you don’t hear as words are in fact words, so you untangle them.”

And the conversation is actually a sub-plot of the film, revealing Gus Gus’ secret cheese problem! Who knew?

“I invite anybody to slow this [film] down when the home entertainment release is happening and you’ll find the secret story of Gus Gus and his cheese problem,” he said.

“Overeating of the cheese is something of an issue for him”

He also added that he deliberately kept the name of Gus Gus and the cat Lucifer the same.

But fans of the 1950 animation will also recognise one particular scene making an appearance in both films – the moment where Cinderella is told she won’t be going to the ball.

“The shot from behind, from a long distance over her shoulder, does mimic one moment in the film,” said Kenneth.

“[The] moment when Cinderella’s dress is ripped, her family is going to the ball, she runs out of the house, hangs her head over a well and cries.

“It’s not a particularly indelibly marked image from the original movie but I thought it was a brilliantly judged moment from them. I just wanted to mark this by saying, ‘thank you for showing us how to time this moment.’”

‘Cinderella’ is in cinemas Friday, 27 March.
