Cinderella's Lily James On A Liquid Diet To Fit Into Corset

Disney’s live-action Cinderella remake doesn’t hit theaters until March 27, but there’s been a controversy stewing since the very first trailers and images were released in February. The much-talked-about issue? Its star’s minuscule waist. The social media chatter raged on as to whether the studio manipulated Lily James' figure using computer effects. This week she finally spoke out about her “naturally small waist,” claiming that no CGI was used to slim her down.

James also spoke to E! News about how she more or less stuck to a liquid diet to fit into the ultra-constricting corset she wore under the iconic blue gown, designed by Oscar winner Sandy Powell. “If you ate food it didn’t really digest properly, and I’d be burping all afternoon […] and it was just really sort of unpleasant,” said James. “I’d have soup so that I could still eat but it wouldn’t get stuck.” She also claims the volume of the skirt is what makes her waist appear even smaller in comparison.

The obsession with a tiny waist is nothing new in Hollywood, with Kim Kardashian famously practicing waist training, and her sister Khloe recently following suit. On one hand, the British actress is making an effort to play down the skinny infatuation. “I think it’s so important to be healthy and confident and natural and not put too much stress on trying to be thin,” she told E! “I don’t get the thin, thin thing at all.”

But she’s also come to her own defense since the waist debate started. “I think it’s all very hypocritical, and [the press] contradict themselves, and they’re drawing more attention to it,” James told the Los Angeles Times earlier this week. “I’m so healthy. I’ve got hips and boobs and a bum and a small waist.” We should all be so lucky.
