Cobie Smulders On Agent Hill's Role In Avengers: Age Of Ultron

Returning ‘Avengers Assemble’ actress Cobie Smulders suggests there will be “a different vibe” to her character Agent Maria Hill in the upcoming sequel ‘Avengers: Age of Ultron.’

Though a comparatively minor role in the Marvel Cinematic Universe thus far, as the right-hand woman of Samuel L Jackson’s Nick Fury, Smulders has chalked up post-‘Avengers’ appearances in TV’s ‘Agents of SHIELD’ and ‘Captain America: the Winter Soldier.’

And of course, as anyone who’s seen this year’s ‘Captain America’ sequel will be aware, events of that movie have had a very significant impact on the MCU - and have by necessity resulted in something of a career change for Agent Hill.

Speaking to Entertainment Weekly in promotion of her latest movie 'Unexpected,' the former 'How I Met Your Mother' actress discusses her role in ‘Age of Ultron’ with that blend of breathless anticipation and deliberate vagueness that we’ve come to expect from actors talking about their work in Marvel movies. Still, she does confirm that, as reported, Hill is now in the employ of Tony Stark.

“There’s so many pieces to this giant puzzle, and I’m happy that Maria Hill is one of them. She’s working for Tony Stark, yes, but they shot so many locations all over the world and this team is out doing all sorts of things. So I like to think that Maria is at headquarters, trying to keep everything running as smoothly as possible.

"And working for Tony Stark is a whole other ballgame. She doesn’t have S.H.I.E.L.D. personnel to back her up at her disposal, so it’s an entirely different vibe for her.”

As one of the mere two women on the Avengers staff thus far - set to be increased to three with the introduction of Elizabeth Olsen as Scarlet Witch - inevitably the question of female representation in superhero movies comes up once again. Smulders seems satisfied with the moves the sequel is making in this regard.

“I see Maria as having a more of a female presence in this world, and it’s really exciting to have Scarlet Witch come in, and to see the Black Widow [Scarlett Johansson] have these amazing moments, and see more women on film with all these dudes. It’s great.”

Marvel release ‘Avengers: Age of Ultron’ to UK cinemas on 24 April 2015.
