Comedian Margaret Cho Hits Back At Racism Accusations In Golden Globes Skit

Comedian Margaret Cho has slammed critics who accused the mockery of North Korea during the Golden Globes as racist.

Cho appeared alongside hosts Amy Poehler and Tina Fey playing the role of a stone-face North Korean official called General Cho Young Ja.

But some commentators have called the skits racist.

Tweeting her own views, she said: “’I’m of mixed North/South Korean descent - you imprison, starve and brainwash my people you get made fun of by me #hatersgonhate #FreeSpeech.”

She added: “I’m not playing the race card. I’m playing the rice card. #hatersgonwait #winnersgonpun.”

Cho’s character was introduced by Fey and Poehler early on in the ceremony.

“The Hollywood Foreign Association comprises journalists from all around the globe and we would like to now introduce you to our newest HFPA member. A contributor to Movies Wow magazine and a North Korean army general; Cho Yung Ja. Welcome,” said Fey.

Cho was then pictured holding a copy of the fictional mag, emblazoned with a picture of Kim Jong-un on the cover.

She then requested a selfie with Meryl Streep, which Benedict Cumberbatch promptly photo-bombed.

She was later seen goose-stepping on the stage.

But fans on Twitter quickly too issue with the gags.

Cho has long imitated her Korean immigrant mother during her act, and has even played Kim Jong-il and Kim Jong-un on Fey’s show ‘30 Rock’.
