Could Charlize Theron and Angelina Jolie Team Up For Captain Marvel?

Our gut impulses are instantly telling us this is too good to be true - but a rumour has emerged that Charlize Theron and Angelia Jolie hope to join forces, as lead actress and director respectively, on Marvel’s first female-led superhero movie ‘Captain Marvel.’

The claim comes from US OK Magazine (quotes via The Washington Post), with an unnamed source claiming the two Oscar-winning superstars have become close friends and are eager to work together.

Regarding ‘Captain Marvel,’ the unknown insider says, “Marvel has been courting Angie to direct the project and Charlize is a clear fan favourite for the starring role.

“If Charlize were to get the part, Angie would almost certainly sign on to work with her new pal.“

It’s certainly true that both women have been cited as likely candidates for the film, but this is the first time both have been mentioned for it in the same breath. While we should of course take this with a very big pinch of salt right now, this does point towards potentially the most star-powered Marvel movie yet.

It could very much work to Theron’s favour that she would be approaching the role fresh from the enormously acclaimed ‘Mad Max: Fury Road’ - in which, much to the delight of feminists (and the chagrin of men’s rights activists), Theron’s character Furiosa is arguably more the lead than Tom Hardy’s Max.

Jolie, on the other hand, might not carry quite the same credibility as a director, after her last film ‘Unbroken’ failed to garner the critical acclaim and awards that were initially expected.

It has long been reported that, in making their first female solo superhero movie, Marvel would also look to keep ‘Captain Marvel’ as female as possible on the creative side. To this end, writers Nicole Perlman (’Guardians of the Galaxy’) and Meg LeFauve (’Inside Out’) have been hired to script the film.

As far as directors go, aside from Jolie there have been rumours that Marvel might also be courting Michelle MacLaren, the director initially hired to helm ‘Wonder Woman’ for arch rivals Warner Bros/DC before dropping out over creative differences (ironically to be replaced by Patty Jenkins, the original ‘Thor: the Dark World’ director who reportedly left that film for the same reason).

Could ‘Captain Marvel’ turn out to have Angelia Jolie directing Charlize Theron? Once again, treat it as a rumour for now - but it’s a tantalising thought…

Whoever lands the big jobs, ‘Captain Marvel’ is due to hit screens on 2 November 2018.
