Could Eastenders' Sam Strike Be The New Spider-Man?

Former ‘Eastenders’ actor Sam Strike has revealed he’s Hollywood-bound after landing the lead role “in a very big US film”, but could that film be Sony’s forthcoming ‘Spider-Man’ reboot?

This is pure speculation for now, but here’s what we know so far…

Marvel and Sony are currently casting the role of Peter Parker/Spider-Man for ‘Captain America: Civil War' - which begins shooting in April - and Sony's solo Spidey adventure which is coming 2017.

They’re looking for a younger actor to play a teenage Spider-Man, so at 21, Sam is the right sort of age… and he already has a superhero-sounding name!

Strike quit playing Johnny Carter in the BBC’s flagship’s soap opera over Christmas amid rumours he was heading for Hollywood and on March 3rd his agent Lee Morgan tweeted: “What day to remember, well done @SamStrike exciting news to follow….”

On March 3, Sam revealed he’d hit the gym in preparation for his “new roll [sic]” not long after he’d retweeted Marvel star Robert Downey Jr.

Marvel superheroes always need to be screen-buff, so it would make sense that anyone expecting to play the part in April will need to start hitting the gym pretty soon.

His agent confirmed his client’s latest hiring on Twitter earlier today, saying Sam’s next project is “very big US film’.

A quick scroll back through Sam’s Twitter feed reveals he’s already a Spider-Man fan, first tweeting his support for the departing Peter Parker when Sony’s reboot plans were announced…

Then he proved his geek credentials by weighing into the debate over whether Sony should make Mile Morales the next Spider-Man instead of Peter Parker…

Umberto Gonzalez of geek movie rumour mill site Latino Review was the first put the clues together, posting a photo of Sam on Instagram saying: “The actor is 21 so he is within the age range #Marvel is looking at.”

Coincidentally, if you trawl back through Sam’s Instagram account, he posted a photo of himself wearing the Spider-Man mask back in November with the caption “I’m spiderman” but he also posted a photo of himself wearing a Batman costume in the past too, so we don’t think you can read too much into that.

At the moment, it’s just a lot of smoke with no fire - after all, to an actor’s agent any Hollywood film could be considered “a very big US film” and there are a lot of big movies casting right now.

Sam could just as easily be following his former ‘Eastenders’ co-star Ben Hardy by landing a role in ‘X-Men: Apocalypse’, or it could have landed a part in the 2016 ‘Star Wars’ spin-off which will film later this year.

Other films currently casting include Disney’s ‘Beauty and the Beast’, ‘Bourne 5’, ‘Star Trek 3’, ‘The Mummy’, ‘Assassin’s Creed’… the list goes on and on. Until we get official confirmation from Sam or his agent, you can file this one under R for rumour, but should it come to fruition - remember, you heard it here first!
