DC's 'Swamp Thing' cancelled after airing just one episode

The new TV series of Swamp Thing premiered last week. And now it's been cancelled.

Adapted from the storied DC Comic series, it aired on the DC Universe platform on May 31, but according to Geeks Worldwide, it won't be back after its first season.

According to Slashfilm, the remaining nine episodes will reportedly be shown over the next two months, but there will be no second series, despite the showmakers having previously had 'multiple seasons' planned.

It follows reports of a troubled road to air, with the shoot's production being cut short early, and an initial order of 13 episodes then being slashed to 10.

At the time of the news, Virginia Madsen, who plays antagonist Maria Sunderland, posted to Instagram: “I’m beyond sad. What a terrible decision. We have been cut to the core by those who have never set foot into the Swamp. And despite the rule I am going to use the hashtag. #swampthing.”

The post was later deleted.

It's now emerged through local reporting that the reason for the production shutting down is likely over millions of dollars in tax breaks in North Carolina, where the show was filmed, that failed to materialise.

The show stars Transformers: The Last Knight and Allegiant star Andy Bean as Alec Holland (aka Swamp Thing, with stunt performer Derek Mears in the suit), alongside Madsen, Crystal Reed as Abby Arcane, and Ray Donovan's Jeryl Prescott as psychic fortune teller Xanadu.

It also features Kevin Durand and Jennifer Beals in recurring roles.
